Day In The Life Of A Kindergartener
What’s it like for our littlest learners in Hilliard Schools? We followed Hendrix around Avery Elementary this month to look at what a day looks like for our kindergarten students. Part of the day typically involves quiet work at their desk, and they work on reading, writing, and math. Working with teachers and their classmates in small group sessions also takes place. Lunch and recess are clearly a lot of fun for the kiddos. Other times of the day, the students work on science, social studies, and specials. For this class, that meant getting to know their new chicks that recently hatched.
Preparing students to be Ready for Tomorrow doesn’t just mean once they get into High School. Giving our youngest students the academic foundation to be Ready for Tomorrow begins on the first day they enter our schools.

Engineering Development and Design Students Poster Show

Engineering Development and Design students from all three high schools presented their projects for a poster show to the public. Some of their developed projects ranged from a rebreakable karate board, an eco-friendly 3D printer, and a water-filtered rain barrel.

An Original Song From Academy Vibe Student

Hilliard Davidson and Innovation Campus student, Lisa Curtis has written and recorded some awesome original music over the past year. One song from her October 2021 release has blown up with nearly 400,000 listens across online digital platforms so far. This prompted her classmates from the Innovation Campus Academy Vibe class to collaborate on a unique project. First, Alex Blum, a junior from Bradley, arranged the song for the string orchestra. Then Darby senior Katie Caleodis brainstormed a live video recording of the song with the strings playing. The music was given to Mr. Patrick Barrett at Davidson, who helped his chamber orchestra learn the piece. Caleodis directed and recorded, Davidson senior Thomas Sladek played bass, and Blum played electric guitar. The drums were provided by Lisa’s father, Steve Curtis. Darby senior Mara Ciriaco then edited the video together. “It’s so amazing to see students from all three buildings collaborating for one awesome project! This is exactly what the Innovation Campus was designed to do” said Academy Vibe teacher Mr. Phil Nagy. Please enjoy Lisa Curtis performing her original song ‘Hand Me Downs’ live with her band and orchestra!

Columbus Blue Jackets Surprised Darby Creek Teacher

Stinger from the Columbus Blue Jackets surprised Darby Creek’s Mrs. Braley and her 3rd-grade classroom last week. Mrs. Braley entered a teacher appreciation contest in which she was tasked with writing about herself and her classroom. She wrote about her experience participating in the Columbus Blue Jackets Book Jackets reading program each year. She set reading goals for each month and selected students who reached the goal for prizes, including deeply discounted CBJ tickets. She also wrote about her son’s playing AAA hockey for the Ohio Blue Jackets and expressed how much of a hockey family she has. “When they knocked on my classroom door, and Principal Teske came in with Stinger, we were all shocked! They brought pop-its for my class, provided a gift card for a pizza party to Jet’s, and I got a jersey with my name on the back.”

Winners of the Embrace, Empower & Inspire Award
Congratulations to this month’s Embrace, Empower & Inspire Award winners, Michelle Tomek, Administrative Assistant at Hilliard Preschool, Joanne Clayton, Administrative Assistant at Hilliard Preschool, Kelly Hoenie, Reading Intervention at Alton Darby Elementary, and Nick Hodges, Second Grade Teacher at Ridgewood Elementary. Here are a few things that students and staff have to say about these two great staff members.
“We have so much gratitude for Nick Hodges. Second grade has been an amazing year for our twin boys. Not only has he taken time to get to know our twins as individuals and value their differences, but we are also thankful for the little things that he is doing everyday in his classroom to make a BIG difference. Each day, our twin boys come home and share many ways that their teacher is helping them and their peers. The little things he says and does to connect with kids on a daily basis is evident and much appreciated.”
“Mrs. Hoenie has gone out of her way to help my son this year to feel more confident in school and with his reading. He has struggled with his reading and lost his confidence in himself. His personality was changing because he felt as he wasn’t as smart as the other students. Mrs. Hoenie jumped right in and spent quality time with him during his day. He even got to spend time at bus duty with her which gave him a feeling of responsibility. His personality slowly started to came back, he was excited to tell us about his day and he even asked to read when he was at home. He was so confident that he was calling his grandparents on FaceTime to read to them. This is something he had never done before and it was all his idea. He wants to go to school early just to make sure he is on time each day for her class. Every day when he comes home from school, he is excited to tell us what he learned in reading class and loves to show us what he did. Mrs. Hoenie has given my son his excitement for school back and has given us as his parents a sigh of relief because our son is HAPPY!!! Thank you doesn’t begin to express our gratitude for all Kelley has done for him this year. She was an angel sent to us at the perfect time.”
“Joanne goes out of her way every single day to help others. The list is endless but I see her every single day “pause” her job, put on her coat 4 times a day to go help assist students to/ from bus/classroom. If one of the classrooms is short on staff, she arrives without fail to make sure we have that needed extra hand to help in and out of the building! She is the best!”

These staff members go above and beyond the expectations of the Hilliard Way and truly make a difference in our district. If you know a staff member that goes above and beyond their way to make a difference, you can nominate them for next month’s award at:
