Musical Guest at Weaver

Dr. David Hedgecoth from The Ohio State University School of Music brought three musician guests from Brazil to meet with and perform for some of Weaver’s music classes. The Brazilian musicians were:

  • Pianist- Fabio Curry – Professor of Music at The University of São Paulo
  • Bassoonist- Guilherme Pozzi – Professor of Music at The University of São Paulo
  • Percussionist Giba Conceiçao – Freelance Percussionist from Salvador, Brazil

The guest musicians performed for several music groups. They also had the Weaver students participate in some of the music the Brazilian musicians play. At the end of the day, some of the Weaver students had the guests from Brazil join them in performing.

Davidson and Darby Students Shine in Columbus Mural Program

Five of our high school students participated in the Artsway Columbus Mural Making workshop in Franklinton.  The workshop was a boots on the ground exercise in all things mural making.  Collaboration in everything from budgeting, supplies, color picking, scaling, priming, and painting to augmented reality. They were able to meet professional artists and make work that was both collaborative and entirely theirs.

The ARTSWAY Mural Dedication will take place on Friday, Sept. 9th at 630 at 480 W. Town St.

Columbus.Franklinton Arts District invites you to join us to celebrate the completion of the ARtsway Franklinton Cohort’s community mural. Over 2 weeks, 9 young artists learned how to paint big from some of the best artists in Columbus. The students design is a commemoration of the past 225 years of Franklinton as well as the bright future that lies ahead.

Dedication will begin at 6:30 PM with comments from ARtsway Franklinton instructors Ashley Pierce & Dan Gerdeman and Franklinton Arts District Board President Michael Bush.

Coach Beyond Sports Program

Around 500 student-athletes at Darby High School participated in the district’s first program explicitly geared toward our athletes.  Our district has partnered with The Ohio State University Life Sports Program to work with our athletes on building wellness skills such as better time management, taking care of themselves, and helping build their teams’ overall wellness.

The first guest speaker was Brian Peters, a former high school, college, and professional football player.  He talked to the players about dealing with the pressure of maintaining a positive public image while playing sports; he gave tips on how to be successful on and off the playing field and how to build your wellness routine.

The program began at Darby but will be rolled out to all three high schools this year.  All student-athletes are highly encouraged to attend the after-school sessions.  The coaching staff for all sports is also involved in this training.   The Hilliard School District has an unparalleled commitment to the wellness of all our students. Incorporating these programs into athletics is one more way to reach our students.

Teacher at Brown Elementary Recognized for Environmental Efforts
Congratulations to Brown Elementary’s Mrs. Hernon for being selected as the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District’s Environmental Educator of the Year for 2022 for her Rain Garden!

The Rain Garden Project serves to educate elementary students in responsible citizenship and scientific evidence of correcting issues surrounding their outside environments. This hands-on experience teaches students how natural elements can provide solutions to problems and esthetic value to landscape by improving the erosion of soil caused by our buildings’ roof drainage. Sharing with students the natural, effective use of plants not only corrects an issue caused by architectural design but also provides a habitat for pollinators and butterflies while beautifying their surroundings were the goals.

Vertically aligned grade levels in this project bring to life the standards and concepts taught in students’ grade levels and give practical meaning to all levels of learning they will receive in elementary school. Second grade will learn and provide soil information, third grade will provide life cycle/butterfly information, fourth grade will provide erosion and weathering information, and fifth-grade studies ecosystem learning and information.

We brought our school educational programs taught by staff at Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District (FSWCD) to extend and enhance the curriculum students are responsible for. These programs will expose services that are available to residents to improve their community. This is a life lesson that will carry through to their adulthood.

To maintain a mindful budget, second and third graders will embark upon a grow lab in our Innovative Discovery Center (IDC) with our IDC Specialist to plant seedlings and support their growth through spring. They were planted in the rain garden recently, which promotes resourcefulness in students’ ability to make a difference in their community and environments.

This project serves as real-life work that positively affects an environment and its community. This learning will offer all levels from the model, Bloom’s Taxonomy: Remember, Understand, Apply, Analyze, Evaluate, and Create. Students will be able to revisit and review the knowledge each time they pass by their rain garden creation. Finally, Hilliard City School District and Brown Township will benefit from the habitat garden and beautification of their school premises.

Amazon Web Services Spends Day At The Innovation Campus

Leaders from the Amazon Web Services Inclusion and Outreach Global Team spent the day in Hilliard Schools at the Innovation Campus learning from our students and staff.

AWS InCommunities has helped build and support 17 AWS Think Big Spaces, where students can cultivate their interest in science, technology, engineering, and math outside of a classroom environment, within the Hilliard City Schools district. AWS has also collaborated with Hilliard City Schools on STEAM curriculum and events such as Girls Tech Day, AWS Tech Week, and Young STEM Initiative, as well as on professional development initiatives. AWS has also provided access to STEAM experts and members of AWS’ workforce for various STEM workshops, career conversations, and events.

As a part of our continued partnership, hosting the Inclusion and Outreach Global Team members was essential so their team could hear from our students and teachers directly.  They heard how the support from AWS impacts our students in all grades, from kindergarten to seniors, every day on their journey to be Ready for Tomorrow.
