Station Wellness Team Welcomes New Students and Families With Special Event
Research indicates a sense of belonging is positively associated with academic success and motivation. New students and their families at Hilliard Station’s Sixth Grade School are well on their way thanks to a recent event.

The school’s Wellness team, made up of Amy Graber, Alex Basiakos, Taylor Hannon and Jody Rapp, along with Sabine Canty, the community and school equity coordinator for the district’s innovation campus, hosted a night for students who are new to Hilliard City Schools and their families.

Canty said it was an opportunity for students and families to feel welcomed and to connect. The team shared information, answered questions, and provided gifts.

“I have every confidence our families left feeling like a closer part of our Cougar community,” said Erin Dooley, Station principal.

Darby Students View Cells Up-Close

Students in Mr. Morris’s science class at Darby High School have been identifying the differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Until today, they had only looked at prepared slides of individual cells and tissues. Today they viewed eukaryotic organisms as single-celled to multicellular organisms. The students could see microorganisms feeding on green and brown algae, and they discussed what would happen if we lost any of these organisms in the food chain and how it would disrupt their entire ecosystem. Experiences like this they will remember and can continue to revisit as they learn about ecology later in the school year.

Skilled Trades Expo Oct. 10th

The 3rd annual Skilled Trades Expo is happening on October 10th at the Franklin County Fairgrounds in Hilliard, Ohio. This event is for all 10th and 11th-grade students in Hilliard City Schools, Interested Seniors, and Tolles Students.

The Skilled Trades Expo provides knowledge and hands-on experiences to students for alternative pathways for viable career opportunities after graduation. The event is partnered with the Ohio Contractors Association, the Associated General Contractors of America, and the Building Trades Council. With there being such a high demand for skilled trades workers, it important for students to be educated on career options other than going to college after they graduate.

Look What’s Cooking at Brown

With last week getting up to almost 90 degrees, Ms. Wintrich’s 1st-grade class at Brown Elementary took advantage of the last day of summer. Her class created solar oven s’mores. With the heat of the sun and the direct sun rays hitting the black paper and aluminum foil, their s’mores were cooking in the solar ovens outside with just the sunlight! This science experiment was a perfect experience for her students to learn the science standard that the sun is the principal source of energy. They learned all about solar power and how sunlight affects the earth. With a hands-on, real-life experience, this lesson about the sun will last a lifetime!
