When a student is struggling in school, it is important to find out why. It may be that a disability is affecting your child’s educational performance. If so, your child may be eligible for special education and related services that can help your child access the educational curricula.
As a first step, the school will try targeted interventions in the regular education classroom and adjust instructional practices before referring your child for special education evaluation.
- Contact the Principal or Special Education Coordinator for your child’s building.
- A member from the school team will discuss the next steps in the evaluation and identification process as outlined in the Evaluation Roadmap below. This process is provided at no cost to the family.
- The results of the evaluation(s) will be provided to you in an Evaluation Team report (ETR).
- If the ETR identifies the need for special education, your child can begin receiving appropriate Special Education and Related Services as documented in an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- If the ETR does not identify the need for special education, your child can be provided other types of support through the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
