From Weaver to Nashville: Evan’s Journey of Inspiration and Hope

Evan Blum, a seventh-grade student at Weaver Middle School, recently journeyed to Nashville as an ambassador for the Serious Fun Network of camps, established by philanthropist, actor, and race car driver Paul Newman. During his visit, Evan had the honor of being interviewed for an upcoming episode of Inspired Lives, a new PBS television series featuring his hero, Indy car driver Josef Newgarden. Josef, the 2023 Indianapolis 500 Championship winner, is dedicated to supporting seriously ill children, a cause close to Evan’s heart. Diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis at age 10, Evan will share his story on an episode of the new PBS television series airing this summer.

Alumni Spotlight – Cole Decker

Cole Decker, a 2012 graduate of Darby High School, said being exposed to things bigger than his existing world throughout high school means he was more than Ready For Tomorrow.

Upon graduating, he earned a bachelor’s in marketing & consumer research from Ohio University before landing a job with 84.51°, a Kroger subsidiary named for its longitudinal coordinates. During his six years with the company, he worked in data analytics, sales and client service, and solutions management. Today, he works as a Product Operations Manager with HIVERY, a Sydney, Australia-based company (yes, he recently had the chance to visit “the land Down Under”) focusing on artificial intelligence for retailers.

What helped him most prepare for his current journey during his high school years was being exposed to various careers and having a wide array of opportunities to express himself. He took everything from photography to engineering and marketing courses while at Darby, the variety of which was unique to Hilliard during that time.

Speaking from his experience in Darby’s photography classes, “seeing firsthand how art and science blend together in the darkroom, and understanding that you can make something really beautiful when you combine the two, propelled me to do what I’m doing now,” he said.

Change in Academic Calendar – No School April 8, 2024, for the Eclipse

Change in Academic Calendar – No School on April 8, 2024, for the Eclipse

Hilliard City Schools will make a shift in its academic calendar on Monday, April 8, 2024, due to our proximity to the total solar eclipse pathway. Students will not have school, but staff will report for a work day.

The April event will mark the first total solar eclipse visible in Ohio since 1806. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of our students and staff, the district has purchased eclipse glasses for every student and staff member. These glasses will be distributed to students before they leave for Spring Break.

Superintendent David Stewart stated, “Our area is expected to see a large increase in visitors who want to view the total solar eclipse.  This, in combination with concerns about safety as well as many families’ desire to view the eclipse, led us to this decision.”

Additionally, please note that there will be no high school sports practices or other extra-curricular activities scheduled that day until after 6 pm and only indoors.  All elementary and middle school after school activities will be canceled.

We are excited about this rare event and the learning opportunities it presents for our students. Thank you for your understanding and support as we make adjustments to accommodate this unique occasion.

Honors Students Transform Lives at Columbus Humane Society

Inspired by their love of animals, two students from the Honors Core Infusion program at the Innovative Hub recently completed a passion project to improve the quality of life for dozens of animals awaiting adoption at the Columbus Humane Society. After reaching out to Sarah Tayse, Director of Operations at Columbus Humane, Lola and Lucy coordinated a donation drive that brought in over 200 new items, including much needed toys and food for dogs and cats. In addition, the Honors Core Infusion students engaged in a day of design by creating enrichment items to help reduce cat and dog anxiety, including lick plates and pup cups for the dogs and treats and toys for the cats and kittens. Congratulations to Lola and Lucy for following their hearts and making a difference!
