Hope Squad National Council

We are proud to announce one of our Hope Squad members from Davidson, Joanne Xu, has been selected to be on the Hope Squad National Council. To be chosen is a tremendous honor and Joanne will be representing and connecting with more 6,000 students nationally and internationally. She will be planning and leading several online trainings, seminars, and conferences. Joanne says, “In Hope Squad, I have learned how to be compassionate, open, and most importantly: aware. Hope Squad is about listening and seeing those who feel invisible. My dream is for everyone to feel connected and supported as a part of a whole. And I believe that Hope Squad has the potential to make that change in the world.”

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE

The technology department has been working closely with two vendors to deal with a few technical problems. The first one is the Canvas Student app. Unfortunately, a bug in the app causes it to report an error that says, “whoops, something went wrong.” Clearing the cache tends to fix the issue for most users but doesn’t resolve the problem. Another workaround is to login to Canvas using the Safari app by clicking on the web link on the iPad called eSchool. We are working with the company to get the underlying issue resolved.

The second common issue is related to the Self Service app, which students use to install district apps on their iPad. Some of our users have reported that this app does not appear on their iPad, or they cannot install apps. If you are having this issue, please turn in a student help request on www.hilliardschools.org/Helpdesk. We are working with the vendor to get a more permanent resolution to this issue as well.

ATTENTION SENIORS!

Per Ohio state law, the Ohio Department of Education will pay for one administration of a college readiness examination to all juniors.  Due to COVID-19 school closures in the spring, we were unable to complete the SAT administration this past April.  On October 14, all seniors, who were scheduled to take that spring test, will have the opportunity to take the SAT test at Bradley.  This date was pre-assigned by the state and SAT.  On October 14th, students will report to school, and the district will mimic the administration procedures typically enforced at a National, Saturday administration of the SAT, with appropriate social distancing and other safety protocols.

Below is additional information that will be helpful on both test day and leading up to test day.  Please contact our school counselor’s office for additional questions or clarification.  Students will NOT need to register individually; we will register students at the district level directly with SAT.  Lastly, all seniors who are taking the SAT will need to report to Bradley on October 14, regardless of Hybrid group.

  • All SAT test security measures will be in place for this state assessment.  Students should be prepared NOT to bring their cell phones into the testing location, and should have proper identification with them. (Current school ID, driver’s license, state ID, etc.)
  •   Students who are found to be in violation of the “No Cell Phone” rule may have their phone confiscated, and face additional discipline consequences, including possible suspension.
  • A portion of the pre-administration will allow students to choose up to four colleges they would like their scores to be sent.
  •  Students should plan to bring an SAT approved calculator to the test administration.
  • Students should be able to see their scores from the state administration in their SAT college board account approximately 4 weeks from the test date.
  •  Please check the College Board website for specific questions.  https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat

Due to COVID-19, the SAT is subject to change depending on our current instructional mode at Bradley.  We will continue to communicate changes and updates as soon as possible.

District Remains in Hybrid

As a reminder, the Hilliard Schools are currently in the Hybrid Learningeducational mode.  (If your student is in the Online Academy this only impacts them if they go into a building for a class.)  During the Board of Education meeting on September 1, a resolution was passed, which will keep our district in the same educational mode for two weeks to provide consistency for our community.  We will continue to update our families through email, texts and phone calls if changes occur.

Inclusivity and Justice Task Force Work

Since June, the Inclusivity and Justice Task Force has met regularly, and has begun breaking down the goal for Hilliard City Schools: how might we become a model district for students of color. You can read more about their work from the Director of Inclusivity and Justice in this week’s guest blog.

The Hilliard School District is going to start Hybrid Learning on Monday, August 31.  On their in school Hybrid days, students will follow their regular bell schedule.  On days they are home, they will work on assignments in Canvas at their own pace.  This only impacts our Online Academy students who are taking a class that requires them to go into a building.  All other OA students will continue as normal.

We are asking every family to do a home health assessment before sending a student to school.  You should first take their temperature.  If it’s above 100.4, you need to keep the student home.  You should also check for COVID-19 Symptoms and contact your health care provider if you have any symptoms.

We know some students may wonder what to expect when they return to school.  Be assured we are following guidelines from county, state, and federal health experts.  Franklin County Public Health has approved all Hilliard School plans.  We have a short video series that goes through arrival, classrooms, recess, lunch, and more.  We hope you and your student watch and discuss before their first day.

In order to manage messages you receive from the District, you can download the School Messenger App and set up push notifications.

Meals will be provided to students on their Hybrid days in school and when they are out of school.  Please note that change will not be given in school, but will be placed on the student’s account for future use.  You can find details on how to get lunches on the out of school days on our food service web page.

WE ARE READY!

The first day of school is tomorrow, August 24!  Our plan is to start in eLearning 2.0.  CLICK HERE FOR THE BELL SCHEDULE.  Students are required to follow the zoom links for each of their classes.  Those links can be found in their Canvas courses.  We all need to be very patient as we start this process.  Mistakes will be made from students and teachers.  It will take a couple of days to get accustomed to this method of learning.  Feel free to contact your child’s teacher or the front office with questions.    We are in this together!

It is important that you join Canvas as an “observer” in each of your child’s classes.  CLICK HERE for instructions on how to enroll in Canvas as a parent observer.

The “Bradley Family Connection” Newsletter is always sent on Sundays to prepare for the upcoming week.  This year, the newsletter will begin with the School Plan for the upcoming week at the top.

WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK

Students will be in eLearning the week of August 24 – 28.  The bell schedule is below.  It is important that students are on time and ready to work each day.  Also, there will be required assignments outside of this time.  Refer to the teachers’ canvas page for more information.

#HCSD1 – First Day of School is this Monday, August 24

We hope our students and parents are as excited as our staff is in welcoming students back to learning.  Our district is starting the year in eLearning.  You can always find your school’s mode on our Learning Plan Status page.

We want to kick off the school year with all the fun and excitement as any other year.  We know for many that means first day pictures!  Please share those photos with the hashtag, #HCSD1 on Twitter and Facebook.  It’s a fun way to bring our community together, even from our homes.

Breakfast and Lunch Options During eLearning and Hybrid

Meals will still be provided in Hilliard Schools to cover scheduled school days when students are learning from home, both during e-learning and hybrid modes.  We are starting this program immediately, please check our 2020-21 School Year Information page for any updates.  During e-Learning, bags covering breakfast and lunch for the week will be given out at all Hilliard Schools.  Students who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch will receive meals free of charge.  You can find pickup locations and times on our web page.

What School Will Look Like in Hybrid and All-In

With the pandemic-impacted start to the 2020/21 school year, we know many students and parents will have questions about what will be happening in Hybrid or All-In Learning Modes.  We have put together a series of short video tips to help you and your student understand what school will look like when we get the chance to be back together.  We hope you take a minute to watch these videos with your student and discuss any concerns.

Message from our Nursing Team

As we navigate our way into the 2020-2021 school year, the District Nursing Team would like to say we are still here for you and our students in whatever learning plan we are in. With that being said, we would just like to remind you of a few things:

First, please remember that it is still important to keep your student current on all of their immunizations. Some of you received letters of needed immunizations in the spring from your school nurse and others may receive notifications this August. Also, please remember after your child receives the immunization(s) to send a copy to the school for our records.

If our school mode moves to Hybrid or All-In, we will need emergency medications and supplies along with current doctor orders in the clinic, as usual. Any daily medications that cannot be given at home will also need current medication forms. As far as morning medications, we are strongly recommending those medications be given at home. If our school model is in full-time eLearning, please have forms and medications ready for when students return to the building in-person.

When we do return to school, please remember we are asking you to do an assessment each morning with each student.  Here is a short video that will walk you through the process.

We know this is a lot for all of you to process, especially since things are ever-changing. Please reach out to your building principal or school nurse with questions you may have regarding your student in their building.

Student Technology Help and Parent Contact Information

While we are in eLearning or Hybrid and your student needs technology help, please start with our student tech help page.

Please take a few minutes to be sure we have all guardian contact information in Home Access.  We must have an accurate MAIN/PRIMARY phone number listed as well as an email address.  In case of emergencies that affect our students, staff or schools we will notify our families in a variety of ways.  The first line of communication will be via email through our SchoolMessenger System.  These messages will go to all families affected by the emergency.   We will also use phone calls and text messaging through SchoolMessenger.

While in Home Access, you can also view and sign off on the student handbook and purchase the Technology Protection Plan for students in grades 5-12.  You will not need to buy the protection plan for students in grades K-4.
