Online Academy Students Win OSU Art Contest

We want to congratulate our Online Academy students who participated in the AstroArt Contest through The Ohio State University. This was a unique opportunity to extend gifted students’ thinking and creativity.

The AstroArt Contest was an international competition receiving entries from five countries and three continents. People of all ages participated. Three Hilliard students received placements in their age bracket.

Third-grader Doniyor won first place in his age bracket. His artwork, “The Great Conjunction,” is featured on this page. The piece was described as when the ‘Great conjunction’ of Jupiter and Saturn formed a ‘Christmas Star’ on the winter solstice. Jupiter and Saturn had their closest encounter in almost 400 years on the solstice, December 21. On the last solstice of 2020, December 21, Jupiter and Saturn appeared the closest together in the night sky in 4 centuries.

Fifth graders Xohana and Kawin received Honorable Mentions.

These Online Academy students are engaged learners that participate in class as well as gifted extension work.

Honor Hilliard Heroes: Deadline to order your banner is January 13!

Hilliard City Schools and the City of Hilliard are working together to honor our community’s veterans through a new program to place banners in Old Hilliard. The banners will recognize and celebrate those who have served their country through military service.

The Hometown Heroes program will allow family members of any current resident or former Hilliard City Schools student who has served or who currently serves in the military to buy a banner, which will be displayed in Old Hilliard around select 2021 patriotic holidays such as Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day.

Those featured on the banners must be military veterans or active duty service members in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard.

The cost to buy a banner is $35. Those buying a banner must provide either a high-resolution digital photo or a hand copy of a photo that can be scanned at high enough resolution to look good on a 16-inch by 46-inch banner.

The first time the banners will be displayed will be in February 2021, then periodically displayed during the patriotic holidays in 2021. When the banners are “retired” at the end of 2021, they will be given to the purchasing families to keep as a memento.

Banner sales begin Wednesday, Dec. 9. The deadline to be included for Presidents Day will be Jan. 13, but banners ordered after that date will be displayed at other patriotic holidays later in the year.

To place an order, download the application to your computer, complete it digitally (or print it and complete it manually), and send it to Lori Mongolier, following the directions on the application.

Strategy Game Club

Meets in SC140 every Thursday starting November 5, after school until 5pm. Students in this club play games focused on strategy and skill, rather than luck! Mr. Crocker has a collection of standard board games like chess, risk, monopoly, and others. Many students bring their own games including other board games, card games, and even video game systems. ATHLETICS

Wednesday, January 6

Boys Basketball – The Freshman, JV and Varsity Boys Basketball team will host Olentangy Orange. Freshman will tip-off at 4:30, followed by the JV at 6:00, and then the Varsity at 7:30.

Bowling – The Boys and Girls Varsity Bowling will host Reynoldsburg. Matches are scheduled to begin at 4:30.

Thursday, January 7

Wrestling – The Wrestling team will host Upper Arlington. Matches are scheduled to begin at 5:30.

WELCOME BACK!

The Hilliard School District will return to Hybrid Learning on Monday, January 4, 2021. Students in Hybrid Group A will be in school on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, those in Group B will be in school Tuesday, and Thursday.

We are asking every family to do a home health assessment before sending a student to school. You should first take their temperature. If it’s above 100.4, you need to keep the student home. You should also check for COVID-19 Symptoms and contact your health care provider if you have any symptoms.

On the in school days, students will follow their regular bell schedule. On days they are home, they will work on assignments in Canvas at their own pace.

Meals will be provided to students on their Hybrid days in school and when they are out of school. You can find details on how to get lunches on the out of school days on our food service web page.

It is the start of 2nd semester. We want to make sure our students are getting back into a solid routine with school. Please encourage a set schedule for their ‘at home’ days. If students need help during the day, it’s the best time to reach teachers. Many students start working in the evening and then do not have the resources available for assistance. Working during the day allows for students to reach their teachers with questions and get responses in a timely manner.

ATTENTION JUNIORS AND SENIORS

College Rep visits are being scheduled! All visits will be virtual for this school year. You can sign up in your Naviance account. Please note – after clicking the registration button in Naviance, you must copy and paste the college’s registration link into your browser to complete the registration process. This is where you will enter your email address, so the college reps are able to email you the Zoom link on the day of the visit. Visits will continue to be scheduled over the next couple of months so be sure to check Naviance regularly. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Wintrich in the Guidance office.

Check Bus Routes for Second Semester

Due to the shift in students entering and leaving the Online Academy bus routes could be changed. The newest routes will be posted online beginning Monday, December 21. You will need your student’s ID to access this information.

Columbus Library Winter Programs

The Library is holding their yearly Winter Reading Challenge. This is designed to keep students’ reading skills sharp throughout the winter months. The 9-week program runs through Jan. 30 and enables students to earn prizes just by reading and completing literacy activities. Learn more at columbuslibrary.org/winterreading.
