Important terms: College applications edition

Early Decision requires you to commit to a college or university at the time of application that, if admitted, you will enroll.  You should apply under an Early Decision plan only if you know that you can make a well-reasoned, first-choice decision.  Upon admission the institution will require a nonrefundable deposit well before May 1.  You may apply to other colleges but may have only one Early Decision application pending at any time.  Colleges will respond to requests for financial aid at or near the time admission is offered.  If admitted, you must enroll unless the financial aid award is inadequate.

Early Action permits you to apply to a college or university of your choice and receive a decision early in the senior year, well in advance of the normal spring response dates.   Though you will hear early regarding your admission, you are not committed to attend and you may apply to other colleges.  If you are applying for financial aid you will follow the aid application deadlines set by the institution.  You are not required to make a commitment before May 1, but you are encouraged to do so as soon as a final choice is made.

Regular Decision is a plan in which institutions review most of their applications before notifying the majority of candidates of their admission.  In this process, colleges set a deadline for completing applications and will respond to completed applications by a specified date.  If you are applying for financial aid you will follow aid application deadlines set by the school.  You may apply to other colleges.  You will not be required to make a decision regarding enrolling before May 1.

Rolling Admission is a term used to describe the application process in which an institution reviews applications as they are received and offers decisions to students soon after they are made.  If you are applying for financial aid you will follow aid application deadlines set by the school.  You may apply to other colleges and you will not be required to make a decision regarding enrolling before May 1.

Wait List is a term used by institutions to describe a process in which they may initially delay offering or deny you admission, but rather extends to you the possibility of admission in the future.  Colleges offer admission to wait list candidates if insufficient numbers of regularly admitted candidates accept their offers of admission.

Wellness Update

The school counseling department is working on improving the emotional health of our students by providing several programs that help students be proactive about their emotional health needs with preventive programs.  We offer in class and group counseling programs.  The goal is to teach techniques that deal with the issues of today teens in a positive proactive manner.

The groups are based on the needs of the student population. These groups will help students continue to build important skills that will better manage symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress management. The groups will also focus on improving motivation and organization skills through various activities, role-plays, and games with their peers. Being in a group setting is a positive experience, as they provide a greater support network for students.

Group Descriptions:

P.O.W.E.R.- This group is all about how to identify problematic or unhealthy relationship behaviors, and things we can actively do to create and maintain healthy relationships. In P.O.W.E.R. group, we will cover topics relating to both friendships and romantic partnerships, including: the “must-haves” in a healthy relationship, how to spot unhealthy or abusive tendencies, how to set and maintain healthy boundaries, healthy conflict resolution skills, dating-violence prevention, and much more!

Yoga Group- In Yoga group, students will learn and practice mindfulness, as well as enjoy the benefits of movement for mental health. Each group meeting will include a movement lesson, mindful tool, and an opportunity for relaxation and regulation. No prior Yoga experience is required. Yoga mats will be provided, just wear comfortable clothes you can move in!

Female Student Athlete Group- This group is designed for female student-athletes at Bradley and will focus on building positive relationships among peers, building leadership skills, strengthening Social Emotional skills, and discussing Mental Health challenges unique to female athletes. Facilitated by Coaches and School Social Workers, the group will meet and have the opportunity to engage in discussions and activities. All participation is optional.

Monthly Table Talk- Join Mrs. O’Neil and Ms. Burgos for one period, once a month on the listed dates. Each month will be a different topic. All are welcome – however, if you are missing classes, you are responsible for communicating with teachers,  all missing work, and making up that work! There will be a sign-in sheet for students so we can make sure attendance is correct. (Topics listed on flier).
