The Ensembles

The Cadet Orchestra is an intermediate-level middle school orchestra for 7th grade students who have successfully completed a year of beginning string instruction. Students in this orchestra will build on technical skill through orchestral performance. At-home practice time outside of class is required.

Prerequisite: previous playing experience or teacher recommendation.

The Concert 1 Orchestra is an advanced-level middle school orchestra. Students in this orchestra will learn and refine technical concepts as well as build on previously learned skills. Students are expected to come to rehearsal with their individual parts learned and well-prepared. This group regularly performs for honors assemblies and large-group adjudicated events. Daily individual practice time outside of class is required and private lessons are STRONGLY recommended. Prerequisite: audition, previous orchestral experience, teacher recommendation.

Concert Orchestra 2  is comprised of advanced string players who can demonstrate a high level of proficiency on violin, viola, cello, bass, piano or harp. Acceptance into this group is by audition only. The members of the Symphony Orchestra should be prepared for a rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule, including but not limited to four in-school performances, state contest, convention performances and clinics. Students in this group are expected to make all performances including those which may involve travel or touring.

Emily Johnson
Director
Emily Johnson, Orchestra Director at Memorial Middle School, is in her eighth year of teaching. Before joining the orchestra team in Hilliard, she taught 5th-8th grade orchestra in the Dublin City Schools, and 6th-12th grade orchestra in the Newark City Schools. A Hilliard graduate herself, she continued her studies at Baldwin Wallace University. She enjoys playing her cello and spending time with her husband, two daughters and dog.
Erin Broadhurst
Director
Erin Broadhurst (Bachelor of Music Education, Baldwin-Wallace College; Master of Music Viola Performance & Master of Arts String Pedagogy, The Ohio State University) has taught for nearly 20 years in Hilliard City Schools. She was designated the Ohio String Teachers Association’s Orchestra Teacher of the Year in 2022 and Young Teacher of the Year in 2003. She has presented several clinics, ASTA national conferences and OMEA state conferences, and regularly presents clinics at the OSU String Teacher Workshop. Mrs. Broadhurst is incredibly grateful for the terrific students and colleagues she gets to work with every day at Bradley, Memorial and Station!
