The Ensembles

The Cadet Orchestra is an intermediate-level middle school orchestra for 7th grade students who have successfully completed one year of beginning string instruction. Students in this orchestra will build on technical skill through orchestral performance. At-home practice time outside of class is required.

Prerequisite: previous playing experience or teacher recommendation

The Concert 1 Orchestra is an advanced-level middle school orchestra. Students in this orchestra will learn and refine technical concepts as well as build on previously learned skills. Students are expected to come to rehearsal with their individual parts learned and well-prepared. This group regularly performs for honors assemblies and large-group adjudicated events. Daily individual practice time outside of class is required and private lessons are STRONGLY recommended.

The Concert 2 Orchestra is an intermediate-advanced middle school orchestra. Students will build on techniques from their 6th and 7th grade instruction as well as learn more advanced musical concepts. At-home practice time outside of class is required.

Our Staff

Sara Given
Director
Sara Given is in her 12th year as the Heritage Orchestra Director and Darby Orchestra Assistant Director. She is also the conductor of the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras Junior Strings and serves on the conducting faculty at Interlochen Arts Camp. Previously, she worked as an orchestra director for the Centerville City Schools and New Albany Plain Local Schools. She also served as Master Teacher for The Ohio State University String Project, a program that provides string instrument instruction to underserved communities in Central Ohio. Sara has presented clinics for The National Association for Music Education, The American String Teachers Association, The Ohio Music Educators Association, and The Midwest String Teachers Workshop. Her work has been published in The Triad Journal for Music Education and Strings Magazine
