The Hilliard Bradley Orchestra is enjoying its 10th season of making great music in a rigorous yet strongly connected setting.  In addition to learning instrument technique, music reading skills and quality literature, the class focuses on the teamwork that is necessary for a performing ensemble to succeed. Members and instructors work to make each class a positive environment where students feel safe to make mistakes and grow and a person and musician.

From 2009-2017, HBHS Orchestra was directed by Mrs. Sarah Popovich, whose strong leadership and excellent musicianship helped the numbers to double, going from 2 orchestras and 60 students to 4 orchestras with 130 musicians. Erin Broadhurst, who served as assistant director each year since 2009 is now the head director and Mrs. Jacquie Stevanus is the assistant director.

Over the years, HBHS Orchestra has attended OMEA State Orchestra Contest with 6 different ensembles, earning 5 Superior ratings and 1 Excellent rating. Each year Bradley sends students to Solo and Ensemble Contest with high scores resulting. Former members have gone on to study music at Oberlin College, Ohio State and Capital University. Bradley has sent many representatives to OMEA South Central Region Orchestra, and three HBHS Orchestra members have earned spots in the OMEA All-State Orchestra including Christy Showalter, Chuks Ogonuwe and Catherine Mazon.

When asked why they participate in Orchestra, students have said:“I like feeling like a part of something BIGGER,” ”It’s like a second family,” “Music helps me connect and bond with friends by playing music – music is good for the soul,” “Music has always helped me in times of struggles…it acts as a reminder that life is beautiful and magical.”
