The Visual Arts
A variety of Ceramics classes are offered, from entry-level courses for beginners to advanced courses for serious art students. Design concepts and ceramic techniques are introduced and refined as students progress from hand-building methods for working with clay to throwing on the potter’s wheel and on to advanced glazing and firing techniques.
After establishing foundational skills in the medium, students gain the opportunity to choose their preferred construction methods. Advanced students are encouraged to enter regional and state competitions while they focus on personal expression and portfolio development.
Photographic processes and composition skills are introduced and refined as students progress from capturing successful photos to utilizing the camera as a creative tool. After establishing foundational skills in the medium, students learn matting and mounting with a focus on portfolio development as they are encouraged to enter regional and state competitions.
A variety of Drawing classes are offered, from entry-level courses for beginners to advanced courses for serious art students. A range of drawing techniques are introduced and refined as students progress from predominately graphite works to charcoal, colored pencils and other media.
After establishing foundational skills in the medium, emphasis shifts to personal expression and technical mastery with a focus on portfolio development as students are encouraged to enter regional and state competitions.
A variety of Painting classes are offered, from entry-level courses for beginners to advanced courses for serious art students. A range of painting techniques are introduced and refined as students progress from watercolors and acrylics to other media.
After establishing foundational painting skills, emphasis shifts to personal expression and technical mastery with a focus on portfolio development as students are encouraged to enter regional and state competitions.
A variety of Sculpture classes are offered, from entry-level courses for beginners to advanced courses for serious art students. Sculpting methods such as addition, subtraction and manipulation are introduced and refined as students explore a variety of media in the development of 3D design skills.
After establishing foundational skills, emphasis shifts to personal expression and technical mastery.
Students will be able to explore and apply skills learned in the Adobe suite. These courses are largely project based and have many opportunities to apply design skills and creativity.
Students will also have the opportunity to earn an industry recognized credential and grow their media arts portfolio.

Thad Ricker received his B.L.S., B.F.A. and Art Education Teaching Credentials from BGSU. He also holds an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from Ashland University. Thad has taught high school art at Davidson for all of his 31 years in the profession. He also served as the Executive Director of the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition for 25 years and currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education.
