Inside the Inspections That Keep Our School Buses Safe

Each year, every school bus in the state of Ohio undergoes a comprehensive annual inspection conducted in partnership with the Ohio State Highway Patrol to ensure vehicles meet strict safety standards before transporting students.

These inspections are extensive and evaluate all critical safety components, including brakes, steering, suspension, tires, emergency exits, lighting systems, mirrors, crossing arms, stop arms, seat condition, warning systems, and overall vehicle integrity. Each bus is also reviewed for compliance with both state and federal safety regulations.

In addition to annual inspections, school buses are subject to unannounced spot inspections conducted by the Ohio State Highway Patrol throughout the year. These inspections may occur at any time and help ensure buses continue to meet safety standards beyond the annual review. Spot inspections can include checks of emergency equipment, lighting, brakes, tires, driver documentation, and overall vehicle condition. This added layer of oversight reinforces accountability and supports a continued focus on student safety every day buses are on the road.

Beyond state inspections, our Transportation Department performs routine preventative maintenance, daily driver pre-trip inspections, and ongoing mechanical evaluations throughout the year. Our technicians work proactively to identify and address concerns before they become issues, helping ensure every bus remains safe, reliable, and ready for service.

Student safety is always our highest priority. These inspections represent an important part of the behind-the-scenes work that helps provide families with confidence that every bus transporting students is maintained to the highest safety standards.
