Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month:  The largest groups of Asian Americans have ancestors from China, the Philippines, India, Vietnam, South Korea, or Japan. Many other Asian Americans have ancestors from Cambodia, Laos, Pakistan, or Thailand.  In 1959, Hiram L. Fong, who was born in Honolulu and the son of poor Chinese immigrants, was sworn in as Hawaii’s first Asian U.S. Senator. On January 20, 2021, Kamala Harris was sworn in as the first female, first Black, and first Asian American vice president of the United States. As a former U.S. senator from California, she is the daughter of an Indian mother and Jamaican father.  The Media Center has two of her biographies, Kamala Harris by Erinn Banting and the e-book, Kamala Harris, Rooted in Justice by Nikki Grimes.
