James Ford
American Family Insurance
Student Athletes of the Month

Carli Rigel – Girls Lacrosse

Carli has led the teams in points (goals + assists) and led the team to huge wins over both Bradley and Davidson.  In those games Carli has scored 6 goals, 4 assists and 7 steals.  She continues to be a great leader on the field and is poised to lead her team into the tournament hungry for a victory.

Chris Burkhart – Track & Field

Chris set the school record in discus at the Chris and Rita Somerlot field event classic. His throw of 170-8 is currently ranked in in the top 10 division 1 in Ohio. He also hit a hammer PR of 187-3 which ranks him in the top 20 in the United States. He also had two wins at the Lancaster Fulton Relays and the Hilliard Tri Meet. Chris has committed to throw Division 1 track at Cal Poly after graduation.

Emma Kowalski – Girls Track and Field

Emma has had a great month in multiple Invitationals and Relays

Darby Panther Invitational:  1st place in the Discus with new meet record of 139 feet 3 inches

Centerville Elks Relays: 1st in Shot Put, 1st in Discus, 1st in Hammer – New School Record

Lancaster Fulton Relays: 1st in Shot Put, 1st in Discus, 1st in Hammer – New Meet Record/New School Record

Emma is ranked Ohio #1 and United States #6 in Hammer Throw!

Dominic Iosue – Boys Lacrosse

Dominic is a senior captain that continues to set the right example. He pushes his teammates for their best and holds himself accountable. Through our games so far in Apri,l Dominic has totaled 26 points and averaging 4+ points per game. Great job Dominic!

Molly Holdren – Softball

Molly Holdren batted over .500 during the month of March.  She also was exceptional in centerfield. She is a leader both on and off the field.  Her season unfortunately ended this past weekend when she broke her wrist.

Adam Ansel – Volleyball

Our team relies on the consistency of Adam Ansel. He plays a very steady role on our team and gets us through a lot of adversity. Congratulations Adam!

Anne Hassay – Gymnastics

Anne Hassay has had a great start to her High School Gymnastics career and with that led her team to a strong finish this season.  At the OCC Championship meet, Anne placed 4th on Vault, and 2nd on Bars, Beam, Floor and in the All Around. She then followed that performance at the District meet by placing 4th on the Balance Beam and the Floor Exercise and tied for 5th in the All-Around Competition.  This allowed her to Qualify for the State Gymnastics meet for those 3 events.  Congratulations to Anne on her amazing season!

Rodney Beneker – Wrestling

Rodney Beneker is the Senior Heavyweight for the Hilliard Darby Wrestling Team.  On March 2nd, Rodney became the 48th Darby State Qualifier, and the 3rd consecutive heavyweight from Darby to qualify for the Ohio State Wrestling Tournament.  Rodney’s path to State was not without adversity; first of all, Rodney is a small heavyweight, meaning he is barely heavy enough to make the minimum for the weight (217lbs.).  Plus, Rodney has been competing with a torn meniscus in his lead leg’s knee since February 9th, which left him on crutches until the day before the Sectional Tournament; it was certainly an improbable Post-Season journey, but Rodney never backed down.  Rodney ended his High School wrestling career at The Jerome Schottenstein Center with a 37-10 record and a legacy that will be shared with the Darby Wrestling program for many years. Congratulations Rodney!

Annie Rauch, Basketball

In 7 games during the month of January 2019, Annie Rauch has averaged 14.7 points per game, 10.5 rebounds per game, 5 blocks per game, and 3 steals per game. Annie capped off January with a 23 points, 11 rebounds, 5 block game against Dublin Scioto to help Darby Varsity girls’ basketball take a share of 1st place in the OCC Cardinal division.  Overall on the season, Annie is averaging 16.6 points per game, 9.7 rebounds per game, 4 blocks per game, 3 steals per game. Annie also broke the All Time Career Girls Basketball Scoring record. The record was 1,069 total points in a career.  Awesome work Annie!

Hayden Apel, Diving

Hayden had a lot of success with diving in the month of January.  He started off the new year by placing 1st at the Delaware Invitational. He attended the Northeast Classic in Canton, Ohio and placed 8th against some of the best divers in the state.  At the Worthington Diving Invite, Hayden placed 1st with a new Varsity record of 293.65, eclipsing his own 6 dive record of 279.10.  He ended the month by placing 1st at the OCC league meet.  This was the second year in a row that Hayden was OCC Champion.  Great job, Hayden!!

Caelin Li – Basketball Cheer

Caelin is a tremendous leader both in the classroom and on the court. Caelin goes above and beyond to improve and motivate her teammates. It’s a privilege and a honor to have Caelin on the cheer team. Congratulations Caelin!

Mason Peck – Swim Team

Mason has consistently won his events during the first half of the season and currently is ranked in the top 20 in the state for his December effort in the 100 Butterfly. Congratulations Mason!

Daniella Santos – Cross country – junior

Daniella Santos – Daniella finished 18th at the OHSAA Division 1 Championships. She is the second Hilliard Darby female in school history to earn  All-Ohio status at the state championships. She also earned All-State academic at the meet for her performance in the class room. At the Nike Midwest Regional meet Daniella finished 10th overall in a time of 17:56, earning All-NXR regional honors, running against competition from Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois. Daniella’s performance at NXR marks the strongest finish in school history at this meet. Congratulations Daniella!

Nicholas Wile – Football – senior

Nick is a tremendous competitor and leader.  Nick lead the team with tackles and provided constant leadership from his Captain position.  Nick contributed in all phases of the game- defense, offense and special teams.  In addition, Nick does extremely well in the classroom. Congratulations Nick!

Naomi Walters – Soccer, junior

* Stats on the season: 17 goals, 11 assist

* Honors: 1st Team OCC, 1st Team All District, Team MVP

Naomi’s play this season has been invaluable to Girls Soccer. She accounts for 50% of the team’s offense. Naomi’s leadership has also shined through in leading Girls Soccer to the District Semi Final. Congratulations Naomi!

Sean Carney – Cross Country, sophomore

Sean took 1st team OCC with a PR of 16:19.60. He was also 1st team all Central District and was an individual qualifier to the regional meet. His effort helped the boys team qualify for the regional meet as a team. Congratulations Sean!
