Hilliard City Schools | Ready for Tomorrow

MS & HS ELite Newcomer Center

It would be AWESOME to document a student’s journeys from their first day in US Schools (when the student and their family meet with me for their OELPS and tour The Hub) to the end of the year when they’ve made significant progress and are like a different person. It would be a powerful story to share with our community, but would require at least a one-year time commitment and some production support.

Hilliard City Schools offers a Newcomer Center for English Learners (ELs) who are new to the country (0-1 years) in grades 6-12. This is a program which provides intensive language and literacy instruction, interventions, sheltered content-area instruction in ELA and social studies, as well as intentional social-emotional support for both students and families in a small-group setting for their first year in the country. Newcomer students who demonstrate adequate progress in language, literacy, core-content areas, and social-emotional attribute development, may exit the program in less than one year.
