Two Brown Elementary Students Win 1st & 3rd Place in Poster Contest

We are so proud to announce that Leyna Sin and Ava Westover submitted posters to the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation Poster Contest and won!!!
Each year, Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District(FSWCD) sponsors a poster contest to provide young people with an avenue to gain better appreciation for our environment and share this caring sentiment through artwork. This year’s theme was “One Water” and Brown Elementary’s Leyna Sin (1st place) and Ava Westover (3rd place) won in the grades 4/5 category.
To prepare the fifth graders, we looked at past winners and the theme for the current year. We reviewed the water cycle and discussed symbolism, and what makes for a good poster. I encouraged them to focus on high contrast and easy to read lettering, detailed imagery full of color, and visual connections to water and its importance. – Mrs. Davis (Art)
This poster contest tied right in with our Energy unit when we talked about renewable vs nonrenewable resources. We talked about how water is all around and how it is constantly being renewed. Students were encouraged to create a poster that tied in with our unit and the parameters of what FSWCD were looking for. – Ms. Kirkland (4th Grade)
