BNLC Birthday Treat/Invitation Policy
Dear Parents,
We recognize the importance of celebrating student birthdays and certainly want to continue this tradition at BNLC. However, to continue to be good stewards of our school facilities and to serve as role models for our students when making nutritional decisions and to be responsive to those children who have food allergies or other dietary restrictions, we have implemented the following policies with regards to birthday treats at school.
**We will allow parents/guardians to send in birthday treats only if PRIOR arrangements have been made with the child’s classroom teacher. Please contact them several days prior to the student’s birthday.
**All snacks must be dropped off in the school office and the teacher will facilitate passing out the treats to the class. Parents are not permitted in the classroom to pass out birthday treats, or to facilitate a “party” with a class. Parents are also NOT permitted to bring in treats to hand out at lunch. All treats must be approved by the classroom teacher and will be passed out by the teacher at a time they deem as appropriate. Thank you for your help in limiting classroom distractions for our students.
**Treats with icing are not permitted. Cakes are not permitted at school.
**In keeping with our goal of promoting wellness with our students, we encourage parents to consider a healthy snack option such as fruit, crackers, gold fish, etc.
**Treats should be purchased from a store. No homemade snacks are permitted. This allows staff to see what ingredients are in a snack. Please avoid snack containing nuts. This helps keep those students with allergies safe.
**To protect classrooms from interruptions and to protect important instructional time, students will NOT be permitted to take treats around the building during the school day.
**Parents are encouraged to send in non-food treats instead of snacks (i.e. pencils, notepads, etc.). These items will be limited to one item and cannot be balloons. Please remember that balloons are never permitted in the school.
**These guidelines apply for any groups using our building after school hours or for any activities taking place after school (i.e. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Tutoring, PTO, etc.).
Birthday Party Invitations– Students are NOT permitted to bring in and pass out birthday party invitations to individual students. Teachers ARE NOT PERMITTED to give class lists out to families. PTO has an online directory that can be used to mail invitations to students. The only time an exception is made to this invitation policy is if EVERY STUDENT in the class in invited, then students are permitted to place invitations in students’ mailboxes when deemed appropriate by the classroom teacher.
We appreciate your support and understanding as we continue to reflect on how to provide all students with a safe and healthy environment while being good stewards of our school facility.
