Rocket Science in Middle School

students involved in presentation

How can you make a bottle rocket project even more interesting? Invite an interplanetary scientist, who also loves rocketry, to come and present. Dr. Jordan Steckloff, from the Planetary Science Institute, spoke with 8th grade students about the size of the solar system, asteroids, comets, dwarf planets, satellites, and more. With enthusiastic stories, he shared plenty of information, and got the students involved creating a scale model of the solar system. Weaver Media Specialist, Christina Dorr, a former NASA Educator, met Jordan last fall when she was invited to participate in witnessing the vaporization of Cassini in the atmosphere of Saturn, concluding its 10-year mission. Jordan was one of the scientists that shared his research at the time.
