The Hilliard Education Association President, Mary Kennedy, spoke to Tharp Arrow Students to explain what Labor Day is, why it is important and why it is celebrated. She read the book, Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers’ Strike of 1909 by Michelle Markel. This is a true story of the young immigrant who led the largest strike of women workers in U.S. history. After the book, she talked with the students about who might have unions today. This led small group discussions about problems the students see in the world today and what solutions might be possible. The theme at Tharp this year is, “We are problem solvers!” so this aligned with the school’s focus for the year.
