Hilliard Station Sixth Grade School Curriculum Summary
The Language Arts curriculum is based on the Common Core State Standards. Reading standards are taught using the workshop approach. This approach can involve mini lessons taught by the teacher, students reading self-selected texts, and the teacher conferring one-on-one or small group with students. Stamina time gives students opportunities to both work independently and with peers.
Writing standards are taught through modeling and guidance using the Lucy Calkins workshop approach. Students will be writing three formal pieces of writing, including a narrative, an argument essay, and an informational essay, as well as informal writing, such as journal entries, reflections, and blogs. Students explore ideas and techniques, write for extended periods of time, and self-assess their writing.
