Quizlet offers study tools for every type of learner

The following story was written by a student on the staff of The Jaguar Times as part of Hilliard Bradley High School’s Journalism Production course.

If you were to ask students, and even most teachers, they most likely would tell you how great Quizlet is for studying. On Quizlet’s mobile app, there are many different tools that will help you learn the material you need to know. Some of the tools include learn, match, write, flash cards, and even a practice test option. Recently the Jaguar Times went around Bradley and asked students and teachers which tool on Quizlet they like the most and why. There are many different types of learners, which is why the variety of answers was very interesting to hear!

Students disagree about which tool is best for them. Kirsten Drexel (11) said “I like the learning tool because it helps me understand the topics better”. The learning tool is a feature on Quizlet that will combine multiple different methods of learning such as multiple choice questions, and even throwing in a little bit of typing feature. I then faced Kasey Schmidt (12) with the question of which tool on Quizlet is the best and she said “Flashcards are my favorite feature on Quizlet because seeing the terms over and over again gets the information in my brain.” The flash cards feature is exactly what it sounds like, online flashcards, and you can star terms that you need to focus on or even terms that you understand. Brianna Goebel (11) said she likes using both the flash cards and the matching feature. She focused more on the matching tool saying that it “helps you get the right terms and definitions together”. Students overall, seem to go in the direction of matching and flash cards. As for me, I prefer the writing feature because the repetitiveness of it is very beneficial for me.

Teachers seem to have a different perspective though. The Jaguar Times presented the same question to Mrs. Stamolis and she said she loves Quizlet and how individualized it is for the students. She then said as for her and her class, “Quizlet live is great because it is a very good self evaluation tool, you will know if you know the information well enough or not”. Teachers use Quizlet in a different way since they aren’t learning the information, so their options vary a little bit. However, Mrs. Stamolis said if she were a student she would love the matching game because “it really tests your knowledge, and how fast you can identify the term with the definition”. Señora Meyers said that she loves the writing tool because it “really helps with recognition and recall” and also said it’s “really helpful for the spelling aspect, and the fact it has audio is also very helpful for pronunciation”. What can be gathered from the foreign language perspective of learning it is that the spelling is big and hearing pronunciation is also very helpful, which is why the writing tool is a favorite for Señora Meyers.

From the information I gathered, I’ve come to the conclusion that Quizlet is very much based on what kind of learner you are.  Do you need the reputation, the spelling, matching? It seems like overall repetition is very useful for a lot of people, which is why the flashcard and writing tools are so popular among the students. Getting the teacher’s perspectives on which tool they think is the best was very interesting.  Quizlet is a very useful learning tool, and I recommend you take advantage of it. Find what works for you. You can do it!
