On January 22, 2018, the Hilliard School Board of Education adopted a change to the 2018/19 school calendar. In order to work with our local law enforcement and fire department on safety training for staff, our students first day back will be August 22, 2018. This is one day later than originally posted. Staff will still report according to their contractual start dates.
Assistant Superintendent Mike McDonough says, “Having students start one day later gives us the opportunity to conduct in depth safety training with our staff, Norwich Township Fire, and the Hilliard Division of Police.” State mandates require us to provide staff training in multiple areas, including threat situations, AED use, blood borne pathogens and more.
Norwich Township Fire Chief Jeff Warren says, “Having the opportunity to refresh and review the skills that are vital to keeping our students safe before the school year begins has been the focus of the schools, fire department, and police department for the past few years.”
Over the next several months, our Joint Safety Task Force will work together on the specific training. This will include some active shooter scenarios being demonstrated in our schools. “I am proud of the fantastic partnership we share as we focus on keeping our schools safe,” said Hilliard Police Chief Robert Fisher. “The opportunity for members of our public safety forces to work closely with district personnel helps us all to be better prepared.”
The Board of Education also adopted calendars for 2019/20 and 2020/21. “We are pleased that we can provide families with the calendars for the next three years,” said Superintendent John Marschhausen. “We know our graduation dates for the Classes of 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. Hilliard families can confidently plan for the future.”
