Welcome Back – Updates and More!

Greetings, Darby Creek Community!

In just a couple of short weeks, we will come back together for another fantastic school year–I am so excited to see everyone and get started with the fun and joy of learning together!!  I hope that you have had an excellent summer break filled with PLAY and time with family and friends. I am certain you all curled up with a good book or two over this long break as well!

Please take note of some upcoming events that you can look forward to in preparation for our first day of school on August 21. You can find these dates in the Important Dates section of this update.

If you are interested in joining and serving our PTO, we can always use your help and support!  We meet monthly for about an hour to talk about upcoming events and ways to serve our community in the best way possible.  You can visit the Darby Creek PTO Facebook page for current PTO information for this year. The PTO will send out information in the coming weeks with the schedule of events and dates for the PTO meetings that will take place for the year.

If you have not already done so, please use this end of summertime to update your Home Access emergency contact information for your child(ren).  This is extremely important for us to have the most up to date information on file in the event your child has an emergency and needs medical attention while in our care.

You can also pay the Technology Protection Plan (5th grade students must have this in order to take their iPads home) on-line through My Payments Plus.

Please note that the Darby Creek Elementary school office will be CLOSED on August 19 from 10:15-12:15 due to a staff safety training opportunity that we will be engaging in with our district-level administrators and community first responders.  This training will take place in each Hilliard City School at scheduled times on August 19 and 20 so that our staff can have personalized training in their buildings. During this time we will participate in live emergency simulations. During these times, the buildings will be off-limits to students, parents, guardians, and community members.  We will post signs on the buildings when this is happening. We encourage you to call ahead if you need to go to one of the schools.

This is just one more example of the importance we, as a Hilliard City School community, place on safety for our children while in our care.

As always, please do not hesitate to call me at Darby Creek Elementary School at 614-921-5500 should you have any questions or concerns!

2019/2020 Calendar Change

For the past several years the Hilliard City School District has intentionally put our professional development days on Election Days. We use many of our buildings as polling places per the request of the Board of Elections. We believe we have a civic opportunity to open these buildings for people to exercise their right to vote. While opening the building to the public for voting is important, protecting the safety of our students is also essential. We can’t maintain the same level of security at our buildings during the voting process. Thus, we’ve moved our two professional development days to the Election Days.

In the state budget signed into law by Governor DeWine on July 18, 2019, the March 2020 primary election date changed from March 10 to March 17, 2020.  Our Board of Education approved a calendar change for the 2019/20 school year to reflect this change.

This means our staff professional day will move to March 17, which will give our students the day off.  Both teachers and students will be in school on March 10.  We understand calendar changes can be challenging for our families, so we wanted to get you this information as soon as possible.  Please make a note of this and make plans for your family.
