Reporting Attendance Changes

We are now using a new, more efficient student absence reporting system called SafeArrival. This new system will reduce the time it takes to verify student attendance, make it easy for you to report your child’s absence and easy for staff to respond to unexplained student absences. When using one of the methods below, you will not need to call the school office to report your student’s absence.

With SafeArrival, you are asked to report your child’s absence in advance using any of these three convenient methods:

1. Using your mobile device, download and install the School Messenger app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. The first time you use the app, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance Then Report an Absence.

2. Use the SafeArrival website, https://go.schoolmessenger.com. The first time you use the website, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance Then Report an Absence.

3. Call the toll-free number 844-413-8801 to report an absence using the automated phone system.

These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Future absences can be reported at any time.

Makerspace

We are once again opening up the Makerspace on Friday mornings for small groups of students to come down and build in our Makerspace Room.  The room has moved to a smaller classroom directly behind the media center, so we will only be able to have a group of students between 6-10 at a time.   If you are able to volunteer any Friday between 10:00-11:30, feel free to sign up.  The kids love having the opportunity to be creative and create in the Makerspace area. Here is the link to sign up if you are able to volunteer.

Please note that all volunteers must have a Hilliard City School volunteer badge.  Here is the information on receiving one of those https://bib.com/secureVolunteer/Hilliard-City-Schools/

Clothing Donations Needed

Our clinic is in need of clothing donations.  When you are cleaning out your closets, please consider sending your child’s outgrown clothing to our nursing staff in the clinic.  We specifically need pants for boys up to a size 8 at this time.  Also, please be sure to wash and send back any clothing that your child may have borrowed from the clinic.

Dressing for the Winter Weather

We will go outside each day as long as weather permits and the temperature is above 20 degrees with the wind chill.  Please be sure to send your child with a winter coat, hat & gloves each day, so they will be warm enough to enjoy their time on the playground.

Yearbook Order Forms

Yearbook order forms were sent home last week.  If you wish to order, please do so by January 31st to guarantee your child’s copy of the book.

Morning Drop-Off

As a reminder, students arriving by car should be dropped off at the back doors via the car line beginning at 9:05 am.  The front doors are for students arriving by bus only.  Should you not arrive by 9:20 am, please park in the parking lot & come to the office to sign your student in for the day.

Davidson High School Receives Purple Star Award

Please join us in congratulating Davidson High School for being awarded The Purple Star Award for military-friendly schools. This award recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military.

The Purple Star Advisory Board, formed by the Ohio departments of Education, Higher Education, Veterans Services and the Adjutant General, helps decide a school’s eligibility for the award.  A school is honored with the Purple Star if it completes all the required activities, plus one optional activity listed on the Ohio department of Education’s web page.

School officials will receive the award at halftime of the boys’ basketball game on January 24.  We will also be hosting a military appreciation night with a display of military memorabilia dating back to WWII and a chance to make a donation to help sponsor a veteran or two for Honor Flight Columbus.  We hope to see many members of our community at this wonderful event.

Be Well Parent University – A Few Community Book Talks Left

You just have a few more chance to join in on our community book talks being hosted by Hilliard and Dublin School administrators.  These are centered around the book The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Child Can Succeed. You can register now for these book talks or just show up when one fits into your schedule.

Listening Leaders

Several times a year Superintendent John Marschhausen schedules time to have coffee with our community. These are informal times to grab a cup of coffee and chat with the superintendent.  Mr. Mark Abate, President of the Board of Education, will be joining Dr. Marschhausen this time around. The two will be hosting Listening Leaders at various locations in Hilliard.  The two are committed to listening to you, our community.  As we gather information and listen to understand, we can better plan for future goals and programs.  Please make plans to join us at one of these for a casual conversation.

January 29 from 9-10 am at Coffee Connections

January 30 from 8-9:30 at Panera Mill Run

January 31 from 10-11 at the Hilliard Library

Transportation Alerts

Over the next few weeks we will begin using our School Messenger tool to notify families about transportation delays and issues.  It is imperative that we have your correct information in home access so you can receive texts and emails in a timely manner.  You can also download the School Messenger app to control how you receive these messages, whether by phone, text or email.

This is the same system we currently use for district and school newsletters, attendance and emergency weather notifications.

Civil Service Exam

Hilliard City Schools is now accepting Custodian Civil Service exam applications. These must have a postmark no later than Wednesday, January 22, 2020.  You can begin the application online.
