NO BIRTHDAY’s TODAY!
WORD OF THE DAY
The new vocabulary word part for this week is a common one. We use this word part in many ways and in many subjects.
Scientist use microscopes to make all kinds of fascinating discoveries. The micro- word part means small. Another word for small is minute. The word microscopy means to study something using a microscope.
So a microwave oven must use small waves to heat up the food; what is a microwave anyway?
A microwave is a radio wave that is between 1 millimeter and 1 meter in length. That size makes it a small one for a radio wave.
It sure is convenient to have a microwave oven around—it can be used for so many purposes!

WORD OF THE DAY
Hypothryroidism is the term for a disease where the thyroid gland doesn’t work properly. This causes the body’s metabolic rate to slow way down, go lower, (hypo, of course); often a person suffering with hypothyroidism doesn’t have much energy and gets tired easily.
Remember the hypertension word from last week? No one wants to have high blood pressure but it isn’t healthy to have hypotension either. Low blood pressure can make it difficult for people to kneel, stand for long periods of time, and make it hard to stay warm or to cool off.
Here’s how we can remember what hyper- and hypo- mean:
Hypo- rhymes with low and we know that hyper- is the opposite of hypo- so it means high or above.
Works for me!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO: Mohamed Mohamed and Megan Vela
WORD OF THE DAY
It’s handy for us to already know that the opposite of hypo- is hyper-.
We already know that hyper- means above or more of and have been presented with many new hyper- words during last week’s morning announcements.
Since hypo- is the opposite of hyper- we can figure out what the word hypodermic means.
Are you talking about needles and shots?
Yes, there is something called a hypodermic needle. Hypo- means under or below and dermic has something to do with skin.
A hypodermic needle goes through the skin to get under the skin and that’s when you definitely feel those shots!

NO BIRTHDAY’s TODAY !
HAPPY BIRTHDAY OVER THE WEEKEND TO: Marsha Akoto, Dan Chang, Trent Gill, Mina Yamazaki, Alex Backenstoe, Spencer Bumpus
WORD OF THE DAY
We will begin with a quick review of the hyper- word part and then learn about the next vocabulary one. It happens to be the exact opposite of hyper- and you have probably heard lots of words with hypo- in them.
So if hyper- means above or higher, and hypo- is the opposite, then hypo- words must have something to do with being lower or under something else.
You got it—hypothermia is a word that you hope you will never have to experience.
It is the condition where you have an abnormally low body temperature and you are in serious trouble.
We will review more hypo- words next week. We may even go back and change all the hyper- words we learned this week and make them into hypo- words.

NO BIRTHDAYs TODAY !
WORD OF THE DAY
This word has the word part hyper- in it, but it is pronounced differently. The word is
hypertrophy.
We know what the hyper- part means; something is higher or getting bigger than usual.
Hypertrophy means the enlargement or growth of body organs or parts. This isn’t always a good thing to have happen to you. You would see many examples of hypertrophic muscles at a professional wrestling show.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO: Neelam Khan
WORD OF THE DAY
Someone who is hypersensitive to a certain kind of medicine would have to be very careful when taking it. A doctor would usually try to prescribe a different medication so that the hypersensitivity wouldn’t be such a problem.
Could you call someone hypersensitive if their feelings get hurt too easily? It would mean that they are highly sensitive to criticism or unable to laugh at jokes that they think are about them.
Yes, that would be another way to use the word hypersensitive.
What about if someone is hyperventilating?
It means the person is breathing at an abnormally high rate and it would be a good idea to get the person to slow down their breathing as soon as possible.

WORD OF THE DAY
Here is a true or false question for you:
Hypertension is another word for high blood pressure.
I’m going to say that it is true because hyper- means high or above and I think tension has to do with how the blood pumps through our arteries and veins.
It is true that hypertension is another word for high blood pressure. It is especially important that adults get their blood pressure checked on a regular basis. Blood pressure readings are reliable indicators of diseases and a way to find out what’s going on inside our bodies.
Someone who is hyperaware would make a useful hunting partner. This hyperaware person would hear better, see better, and smell better than people with typical senses. Comic books superheroes are often portrayed as hyperaware of their surroundings and this helps them to solve crimes.

WORD OF THE DAY
This week doesn’t have any static type words; we aren’t standing still---we are above that concept and we already had that word part.
What do you mean by being above something? Do you mean up in the sky---that far above?
No---the word part for this week is hyper-. When a word has hyper- in it, then it means to be higher or above the usual amount.
So---a hyperactive child would be someone who is unusually busy or way more active than most other children.
For sure—they are the ones who make you tired just watching them….they go from one activity to another and don’t rest or slow down.
I think we can figure out the meaning of most hyper- words since we know what the hyper- part means.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY OVER THE WEEKEND TO: Lukas Brorein, Jerre Creske, and Callan Myerscough
WORD OF THE DAY
The word scripture means sacred writings. Of course, we knew it would have something to do with the written word and now we know it has a religious connection.
In the Christian faith the Bible is the collection of sacred writings, or the Scripture.
The Koran is the collection of sacred writings or the Scripture in the Islamic faith.
This week’s vocabulary word part is included in quite a variety of words. Since the written word has become such a vital part of human life, it’s no wonder that script-
and scrib- words are so common.
Hooray for the scribblers of the world---scribble on!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO: Jason Hara and Trisha Schemine
WORD OF THE DAY
In medieval times, there were men called scribes who spent their whole short lives writing—what a life!
At least they usually had enough food and a place to live. These scribes were official writers and spent days, months, and years copying sacred manuscripts for the Christian church. There weren’t any local Barnes & Noble book stores or Amazon.com for people wanting to buy books.
The monasteries were built with special rooms called scriptoriums. This was the place where you would find the scribes doing their jobs. Valuable manuscripts were stored, read and copied in these rooms. If possible, special attention was given to the window placement and lighting details in these rooms. Maximum use of natural light was the goal.

NO BIRTHDAYs TODAY!
WORD OF THE DAY
What’s a manuscript? It must have something to do with writing since it has the word part script- at the end of it.
A manuscript is a written composition or document. We often use this word when describing historical documents as they were written by hand.
Then the word scriptwriter is easy to figure out; it must be someone who writes scripts!
People who are scriptwriters for TV and radio shows, movies and plays are very important to the success of the entire production. If the script isn’t well written, there won’t be a director who wants to put this story together and make it come to life for the audience.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO: Blair Nelson
CATS MAKING TRACKS: White team has some very "official students". Among them are Yahya Sheikh and Scottie Munson. Yahya is a soccer referee for Hilliard Soccer and Scottie umpires baseball games in the summer.
WORD OF THE DAY
When someone gets bronchitis and goes to the doctor, they may receive a prescription from the doctor. This is a written order for medicine; the doctor has prescribed or written down the instructions that will hopefully make you feel better. The doctor has also signed the prescription order so that everyone knows who gave the order.
These words all have the script- word part in them; another related word part is scrib-.
And it also has something to do with writing or the written word.
So a scribbler is someone who scribbles, right?
Yes, to scribble means to write or draw carelessly or be in too much of a hurry to write or draw accurately. Someone who scribbles is a scribbler.
I have heard that when doctors write those prescriptions, they often scribble the orders because they are usually in a hurry and have so many things to do.
Thanks to computers and new software programs, many doctors only have to write their signatures on the prescription orders and the computer does the rest for them. This is a great example of how technology has made routine tasks easier and more accurate.

WORD OF THE DAY
Weaver students have a magazine sale every fall; what happens is that they actually sell subscriptions to a wide variety of magazines.
What do you mean by subscriptions? Don’t you just get a magazine delivered in the mail every month or even every week?
Yes, that’s what a subscription is---you have paid money for a certain amount of time so that the magazine or newspaper will be delivered to you. You can subscribe to online newsletters and magazines, too.
Our vocabulary word part is script- and it means something written. Right here in Weaver’s Media Center we can read and check out all kinds of magazines. Mrs. Weaver has over 15 subscriptions to magazines that are delivered to the school weekly and monthly.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY OVER THE WEEKEND TO: Jesse Fairchild, Allyson Lybbert, Robert Henley, Zach Logsdon, Amanda Scurlock, and Devin Sheets
WORD OF THE DAY
If Mr. Vroom wears a polychromatic tie with his white shirt, what do you think that tie would look like?
That’s easy---since the word polychromatic has poly- in it, there will be several colors in the tie. It could also be described as a multicolored tie. Chromatic has to do with colors and poly- means many.
So if the tie was monochromatic, what would it look like?
The tie would be one solid color with no other colors; mono- means single or one.

WORD OF THE DAY
A polyunsaturated fatty acid is a phrase that you may have heard about when people talk about the different kinds of fats found in food.
We know that the poly- word part means there are many unsaturated chemical bonds in these acids. And a fat that is unsaturated is better to eat than a saturated one. That’s a whole separate nutrition and chemistry topic that we won’t get into today.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO: James Herth and Bonnie Zhao
WORD OF THE DAY
Proteins contain polypeptides; these are chains of amino acids that contribute to the structure of the protein.
There must be more that one peptide in this chain because of the poly- word part.
Here is another poly- word: polyglot.
Polyglot can be used as a noun or an adjective that describes someone who can speak or write in several languages.
This is an unusual sounding word for having an ability that is typically admired and respected. This is an example of an odd word in the English language, that’s for sure.

WORD OF THE DAY
We will be making history on this Election Day of 2008. We will also learn what a polygraph is…..
Here’s a clue that could help you figure out the meaning of the word polygraph:
It would be very interesting to have the candidates for public office all take a polygraph test.
Depending on the responses they give to the questions, we would learn who is giving honest answers and who is stretching the truth a bit.
Another name for a polygraph is a lie detector. Poly- means many or several, so that means there is more than one answer and also more than one way to measure everything that is going on at the same time.

WORD OF THE DAY
The word thermostat has our vocab word part in it; the definition of a thermostat is a device that automatically regulates the temperature of something. When you set your house thermostat to 68 degrees, the furnace is supposed to keep the house temperature at that 68 degree temperature until you decide to change the setting on the thermostat.
There are thermostats in almost every room in this school building. And even though the thermostats may be all set for the same temperature, there are some warm and some downright cold rooms in the school. This isn’t a thermostat problem, it is a mechanical and design problem in the heating and cooling system for Weaver Middle School.

WORD OF THE DAY
Today we will learn some stat- words. Yesterday’s words were sta- ones.
The word static means to be stationary; whatever it is doesn’t change and it remains passive.
Static electricity is the kind that doesn’t flow as a current; it remains passive even though you may feel a bit of a charge.
In Physics, the word static is the opposite of dynamic. These words are used to describe bodies at rest or forces in action. Since static means to stay the same, dynamic means just the opposite, or something that is changing and not staying the same at all.

We begin the week with a standing still vocabulary word part. The word part is stat- and it is pronounced either stat- or sta-.
Here is an example of a sta- word: station. The bus station and the railroad station both stay still or stand while the busses and trains come and go. The stationmaster is the official name of the person in charge of a railway station. A railway station is a regular place to stop along the railroad line of tracks.
The game of Freeze Tag involves players who have to remain stationary until someone comes to tag them and unfreeze them. To be stationary means to keep fixed or to stay in one place.

NO BIRTHDAY’s TODAY!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY OVER THE WEEKEND TO: Scott Harmanis, Alec Mathena, Denzel Burke, Surya Freeman and Haleigh Stevens
WORD OF THE DAY
The word sanctimonious can be used in a complimentary or critical way. It is not always easy to tell when a person who appears sanctimonious is truly practicing what he or she believes.
People can pretend to be sanctimonious as a way to get other people to trust them. When a person appears to be very religious and holy, they can get people to believe in them. This can lead to all kinds of troubles; credit card numbers and bank account numbers can all be given out to criminals by mistake.
Next week’s vocabulary word won’t have a lot to do with holiness, safety, giving permission or punishments.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO: Will McBride
WORD OF THE DAY
What does it mean when someone says they will see visitors in the inner sanctum?
We know the sanct- word part can mean holy; maybe it is a special holy or secret place.
That is what it means: a sanctum is a holy place or a person’s private room or study.
So when a movie character tells their butler to show the visitors into the inner sanctum, it means the butler will send them to a private room somewhere inside the mansion.
Since the phrase inner sanctum was used, we can assume the butler will show the visitors to an inside location, not an outer or outside place.

Today we have a sanct- vocabulary word with the sanct- part at the end of the word. The word is sacrosanct.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO: Shannon Joyce
WORD OF THE DAY
We will use the word sanctify as a verb in this sentence:
The Pope was asked to sanctify a new church building in New York City.
So the Pope was consecrating or making the building holy by sanctifying it. And how does this relate to the word sanction?
This is another example of the word having more than one meaning. To sanction something means to approve an action or give permission for something to happen.
It isn’t quite the same as making it holy. A sanction can also be a penalty for not following the rules.
Economic sanctions against a country mean that other countries won’t do business with it until it follows the rules or meets the expectations of the other countries.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO: Spencer Lookabaugh and Andie VanVoorhis
WORD OF THE DAY
We certainly don’t use the word holy around school very much. If Weaver was funded by a private group or a religious organization, we might hear the word holy used every day. A word part that means holy is sanct-.
I have heard of a church building having a sanctuary. What is a sanctuary?
A sanctuary is a place in the church building where the altar or special table is located. It is considered a very holy place in the church.
The word sanctuary has another meaning as well. It can be a place of safety and protection for plants, humans, and other animals.
It is a place of refuge or a place where no one can be hurt. Ducks would be safe from duck hunters if they lived in a bird sanctuary. The hunters are not allowed to hunt inside the sanctuary. The ducks would be safe as long as they didn’t fly out of the sanctuary!

WORD OF THE DAY
If a centipede has one hundred legs, how many legs do you think a millipede would have?
I would guess one thousand but do you suppose that anyone has counted all the legs to find out? Sounds like a Science project for elementary age students who need practice counting!
I’d rather count one hundred dollar bills instead of legs on an insect. By the way, whiich president is on the United States thousand dollar bill?
Grover Cleveland was on the thousand dollar bill but that bill isn’t made anymore. The year 1945 was the last year they were printed. We still have one hundred dollar bills and
Benjamin Franklin is on that bill.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO: Tianna Palmer
WORD OF THE DAY
Yesterday we had a math problem to solve with our word of the week. Here is the answer: there are ten centuries in one millennium. Each century has 100 years and if you multiply 10 times 100 you get 1000.
Now let’s see what a millisecond is. It’s easy to figure out because we know that milli- means a thousand. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second.
That is a very, very short length of time. Remember the accuracy of the swimming times during last summer’s Olympics? The judges relied on the accuracy of stopwatches and other timing instruments. Machines can be made to measure the times that we really can’t see because they go past our eyes so quickly.

NO BIRTHDAY’s TODAY !
WORD OF THE DAY
Last week we learned the definition of a century; what does the word millennium mean?
The cent- word part means one hundred and the word part milli- means one thousand.
A millennium amount of time is equal to a thousand years.
And that is so much longer than a century, isn’t it? How many centuries are there in a millennium?
Tomorrow we will announce the correct answer; this will give you time to think about it and check with your friends!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO: Luke Myers
WORD OF THE DAY
What’s ten times one hundred? It is one thousand and our vocab word part for this week is milli-.
A milliliter or milligram or millimeter are all one one thousandth of the liter, the gram and the meter. This certainly makes for some very small amounts and measurements.
So how does the word millionaire fit into this category? It has the word part milli- in it.
This time the milli- multiplies and a million is one thousand times one thousand. A millionaire is someone who has at least a million dollars worth of something valuable!
We could be millionaires someday if we save money regularly, spend it wisely and invest it carefully.

Since the word contains cent-, I think that is a True statement.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO: Kyle Antal, Lindsey Cassell and Hannah Wolansky
WORD OF THE DAY
The word cent shows up in the phrase per cent; we have learned about per cents in our Math classes.
Would you say that 100% of the Weaver students know about per cents and what they mean?
I would say that 98% would know about per cents or parts of one hundred. We have had many worksheets teaching us how to calculate and then use per cents to solve problems.
Do you think that our teachers are 100% Buckeye fans?
No, because there is at least one loyal Michigan fan, so we can’t use that 100% figure!

WORD OF THE DAY
What about the word centigrade? A thermometer with a centigrade scale uses a different system than a Fahrenheit one.
The centigrade scale has 100 degrees between the freezing and boiling points of water. Zero is the freezing point and 100 is the boiling point. This way of measuring temperatures is used all around the world. The Fahrenheit system is used more in the United States than anywhere else.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY OVER THE WEEKEND TO: Breanna Anderson and Nicholas Mahaney
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO: Ashley Wingo
WORD OF THE DAY
This week’s vocab word part just adds on to last week’s deca- one. Think deca- times ten and you will get cent- words.
So if someone is a centenarian, they must be 100 years old!
That’s correct, because the word part cent- means one hundred.
Here’s another cent- word that we recognize: century; it means one hundred years of time.
And we are living in the 21st century right now! Is it possible to live in more than one century?
Yes, when someone is born in the 1800’s, and they live into the 1900’s, they have lived in two centuries. And they may even be a centenarian, if they live to be 100 years old.
1. Congratulations to the 8th grade band members on your performance at the Davidson football game last Friday! Great job everyone!
