This web quest explores the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo and the aspects that surround this celebration.  The purpose of this lesson is to learn about the history, culture, and food behind this holiday.

Task

Your job is to explore various web sites to help in your understanding of Cinco de Mayo.  In a group of 2-3 you will research this information to answer questions and to take notes.  You will be using the data to prepare a presentation about Cinco de Mayo in which you will present an authentic picture book to the class.

The Process

           

ü     Choose your group.  No more than 3 people to a group.

ü     Print this checklist (one per group, will be turned in)

 

Activity #1 – Get the Facts!

 

ü     Print el Cinco de Mayo fact sheet and el Cinco de Mayo answer sheet …………..see teacher’s note BEFORE PRINTING.  Answer the questions as a group and turn the worksheet in when finished.

ü     One copy per group must be turned in

 

 

Activity #2—Vocabulario

 

 

ü     Print the Vocabulary sheet/word search

ü     With your group define the 12 words at the bottom of the page in Spanish

ü     Find the Spanish words in the word search

ü     Your group must use 7 vocabulary words in the group picture book presentation

ü     Each group member should turn in his/her own copy of the word search

 

 

Activity #3 --Write an article for the newspaper describing Cinco de Mayo in your community

 

ü     Use the following guideline to construct a well ordered one paragraph essay about Cinco de Mayo

ü     Turn in ONE copy of the newspaper article

 

 

Activity #4—Story Book

           

ü     Presented on the day of the fiesta

ü     Each group constructs ONE storybook

ü     Print and use the directions below as a checklist to help you create a storybook telling about how you and your friends spent Cinco de Mayo

ü     Cinco de Mayo (choose ONE of the three)

Projects will be evaluated using the following criteria

 

ü     Work is done cooperatively

ü     Work is done in a timely manner

ü     Information is accurate and appropriate

ü     Presentation is well planned and informative

Conclusion

 

Upon reading the description of Cinco de Mayo, learning some Spanish vocabulary associated with the holiday, writing a newspaper article about the holiday, creating a storybook about Cinco de Mayo, and celebrating Cinco de Mayo in class….you and your group should have a better understanding of Cinco de Mayo and the cultural significance of this holiday.
