Kindergarten Registration/Screening Information
2010-11 Registration
If your child will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 30th 2010, he/she is eligible to start kindergarten. Each child needs to be registered in his/her “home” school, based on current school boundaries. If you do not know which school is your home school, please call 771-4273.
The State of Ohio’s new budget bill HB 1 requires school districts to offer all-day kindergarten beginning with school year 2010-11. However, recent action in the statehouse provides for a one-year waiver of this requirement for districts who request it.
The implementation of all-day kindergarten in the district is estimated to cost an additional $1.3 million in salaries and benefits and require an additional 23 classrooms. Due to the financial strain and space challenges, the Hilliard City School District will apply for the one-year waiver when the application becomes available. Therefore, the district intends to continue offering its current kindergarten programming in the coming school year.
Registering your child is a 3 step-process:
Pre-Registration will be held at the child’s “home” school building based on residency and current school district boundaries. Contact the Hilliard City Schools Administrative Office at 771-4273 if you are unsure of which elementary building is the “home” school for your child.
Parents should go to their "home" school gymnasium at 7:00pm on January 20th to pick up a registration packet and make an appointment for registration.
It is necessary to attend this meeting in order to schedule a time for registration. If you miss the pre-registration, you will need to call your home school to make an appointment. Only one parent is needed at the pre-registration evening and it is not necessary to bring in any paperwork at that time. Children do not need to attend this phase of the registration process. At this time, you will receive a packet that will detail what is needed in the next phase of the registration process.
When you receive a packet, you will be assigned a kindergarten registration date and time. On the day of your registration appointment, one of the custodial parents or guardians must bring the required documentation to the Central Office Annex (5323 Cemetery Rd., located behind the main Central Office building). When all necessary registration documents have been received, you will then make an appointment for kindergarten screening on your school’s assigned day.
Students will not be screened until all required paperwork is submitted. On the screening day, your child will be escorted to an area where vision, speech and school-readiness assessments are done. Please plan to spend about one hour completing the screening process.
Frequently Asked Questions:
• What if I did not attend the
January 20th registration night and missed my registration day in February?
Obtain a kindergarten registration
packet from the District’s Records Compliance Officer (located at the Central Office Annex), or by downloading the online packet. You will then need to bring in all of your registration documentation to the Record Compliance Officer anytime between the hours or 8am-12:30pm or 2-4pm.
• What do I need to bring to my child’s registration
appointment?
You should bring completed registration forms and appropriate documents to the district's Records Compliance Officer (located at the Central Office Annex). These include copies of the child’s
birth certificate, official immunization record, parent proof of residency, proof
of custody (if applicable) or proof of “pending” custody. If
you are unsure about what to bring, please call our Records Compliance
Officer at 921-7096. Only completed packets with all required
documents will be processed. ( Children should not attend.)
• How do I schedule an appointment for screening?
When all necessary registration documents have been received, you will then make an appointment for kindergarten screening. Students will not be screened until all required paperwork is submitted.
• What should I expect during screening?
District-trained kindergarten screeners will screen your child. This
is not a pass/fail screening. A school nurse will evaluate general
health: vision, speech and any learning-related function will
also be evaluated. Your child will spend a short time listening to
a story, playing and interacting with other children. You can expect
this process to take approximately 60 minutes.
• When and where can I apply for an intra-district building
transfer?
Elementary Transfer Request forms will be available March 9, 2010 in all school buildings and at the District's Central Office. They must be received by the end of the business day April 12, 2010.
Return completed forms to: Mrs. Leslie McNaughton, Assistant Superintendent, 5323 Cemetery Road, Hilliard, OH 43026.
