Our Commitment to Families
A computer is designed to be a rich learning tool that can be used for games from time-to-time. It’s supposed to be innocent, so it is hard to imagine computers – more specifically, the Internet – can be a threat to your child. To that end, Internet Safety is quickly becoming a grave issue for parents.
With computers becoming a household staple and Internet access readily available, we’re beginning to see students place themselves in compromising situations through the use of personal web sites, chat rooms, and even picture phones.
In an effort to help our community stay safe, we have compiled the following information as part of our commitment to supporting healthy children and families.
A Quick Checklist
1. Place the computer in the most public room in your home.
2. Establish ground rules for Internet usage.
3. Share time online by surfing on the Internet with your child.
4. Instruct your child not to give out personal information without your permission.
5. Instruct your child never to respond to email or chat messages that make them feel uncomfortable. (And ensure that your child reports such messages to you when/if they occur.)
6. Check your computer’s Internet history, monitor your child’s email and blogs and let him/her know why you will do this.
7. Know exactly what various parental control tools can and cannot do and how they work.
