Country Fair with a “Western Flair”!

Dear Ridgewood Families,
Greetings from Carn-a-Fair! Thank you and congratulations to all of you on a fantastic first meeting! It was great to see the usual faces all working together to make this year’s Carn-a-Fair a success for Ridgewood Elementary. We believe this is going to be an exciting and productive year! Thank you for deciding to be a part of Carn-a-Fair!
For those of you who were able to attend the first Carn-a-Fair meeting, you can tell from our first get-together, we have an ambitious agenda planned for the next five months. There are many different opportunities for our kids to learn and grow and have fun while attending Ridgewood Elementary. We definitely have a plan in mind of where we, as a unit, would like to end up, but there are still many action steps that have to happen between then and now.

What is Carn-a-Fair?
Carn-a-Fair is a day of games, food and fun as our school takes on a distinct western atmosphere. Classrooms become game rooms. The cafeteria becomes Miss Kitty’s Diner. The gymnasium is turned into a prize bar and silent auction area. As students win “redeemable bucks”, they may choose to spend them at the prize bar. Our silent auction is a fundraising event during which a large number of donated items are placed up for bid to Carn-a-Fair attendees. While the auction is open, people may write down bids on a sheet placed in front of each item. The highest bid at the end of the allotted time wins the item. There is also a raffle offering age-appropriate prizes and, finally, a special raffle from the teachers. In previous years, teacher raffle prizes have included a special gift from or time doing something special with a favorite teacher.

Volunteers Needed!
In order to make our Carn-a-Fair plans and dreams a reality, we’re going to need some help. We are all parents here so we know how busy you and your families are. Therefore, we have done our best to make the volunteer needs specific, concrete, and short. We strive to only ask of your time when absolutely necessary.
To coordinate the many different activities that comprise Carn-a-Fair, the work is split up across the following subcommittees

¨ Carn-a-Fair Chairperson(s) – Responsible for coordinating the work of all of the sub-committees.

¨        Carn-a-Fair Treasurer – As the Treasurer, you will work with the other sub-committees to count, log and deposit all monies collected for Carn-a-Fair.
¨ Silent Auction - This sub-committee is responsible for reaching out to the community to acquire items to be put up for bid in the CAF Silent Auction.

¨        Games – This sub-committee is responsible for ensuring all of the games are tested and ready to go in time for CAF. If you take this role, you must know how to have fun.

¨       Food and Kitchen – This sub-committee is responsible for securing donations of food and kitchen goods, ordering food and beverages, setting the prices and running the food service the day of Carn-a-Fair.

¨        Prize Bar – This sub-committee is responsible for ordering the prizes the kids can purchase with the “redeemable bucks” they buy and/or win as well as the set up and running of the Prize Bar on the day of Carn-a-Fair.

¨        Raffle – This sub-committee is responsible for collecting donations from parents and community businesses to raffle off during Carn-a-Fair as well as for the sale of raffle tickets to the students.

¨ Tickets – This sub-committee is re sponsible for managing the collection and distribution of tickets used for games, activities and raffles. Tickets are purchased for the activities and raffles but are printed at home for the teacher raffle.
As you can see, each of these sub-committees is essential to meeting our goal of another safe, fun and successful Carn-a-Fair. With just a small commitment of time from each volunteer, we can easily accomplish what we set out to do.
