Credit Flexibility Program
In compliance with Senate Bill 311, the Hilliard City School District will offer students the opportunity to earn high school credit(s) through a credit flexibility program beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. Credit flex shifts the focus from evaluating student learning based on seat time to assessing students demonstrated academic and skill level or performance. Learn More
New 7th Grade Booster Requirement
Effective with the 2010-2011 school year, the Ohio Department of Health is requiring all students entering 7th grade to show written proof of a booster dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap), or tetanus and diphtheria (Td). This shot is intended to be a booster dose for students who completed the initial series of DTaP/DT/Td which was required for entry into Kindergarten. Some students may have already received this vaccine. Please review your student's immunization records and/or call your physician to determine if your student still needs this booster vaccine. Written proof of the booster vaccine includes a copy of your student's immunization record or a signed statement from your health care provider listing the Tdap or Td immunization and date it was administered. Records should be sent to your student's middle school. Learn More

Superintendent's Message
End of Year
I am writing this final column for the year on the last day of school before summer break, and I am always amazed how quickly the year goes by! The 2009-10 school year has been a busy and exciting one, beginning last August with the Excellent with Distinction rating on our 2008-09 state report card, quickly followed by the opening of our new Hilliard Bradley High School and culminating with the graduation of nearly 1,000 seniors last week. District Mourns Loss of Student
We regret to have to report a tragedy within the Hilliard Davidson High School community. Davidson junior Rico Butler drowned while swimming in a quarry near Dublin and Trabue roads.
"We are deeply saddened by this loss and extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Rico," Superintendent Dale McVey said. "Rico was an outstanding young man with unlimited potential in his future, both on and off the football field. He was well liked among the students and staff of Davidson and will be greatly missed."
Additional counselors are available to any students who may need extra support during this difficult time.
School-Age Childcare Program
Open registration for interested families new to SACC will begin on April 28.

Statement from Superintendent Dale A. McVey
This past Friday morning, a charter bus transporting some of our Hilliard Heritage Middle School students on a field trip to perform at Cedar Point was involved in an accident. Fortunately, the students on the bus were not seriously injured. One chaperone was transported to the hospital, but released later the same day. All students were able to continue on to the Cedar Point performance.
By Friday afternoon, the district received notice from the Ohio State Highway Patrol that the driver of the charter bus was intoxicated and driving without the proper commercial license. The driver was arrested and charged.
Our first concern, as always, was the safety of our students. We immediately contacted the charter bus company, Urban Express Transportation, and they assured us that the remaining drivers on the trip were all properly licensed, fully-qualified professional drivers. To further ensure our students' safety, the district also checked for up-to-date insurance on the buses and had the Cedar Point Police check each of the remaining drivers for any signs of impairment. We are pleased to report that all the students were returned safely to Hilliard Heritage Middle School.
The district is greatly distressed about this accident and the condition of the driver. As we moved forward today, we took steps to form a committee to review our policies, practices and procedures surrounding the rental of charter buses for trips involving Hilliard City School students. Through this process, we will determine if any alterations need to be made to our field trip protocol.
Once again, we are extremely concerned about this situation and are taking every measure to ensure our students' safety on future field trips.

Environmental Awareness & Recycling Day A Great Success!
Thank you to all who came out to support the District Student Advisors' second annual Community Environmental Awareness & Recycling Day on Saturday, April 17. The event was a huge success with more than 700 vehicles dropping off recyclables and documents for shredding. Students collected three box trucks full of electronics for recycling and nearly seven tons of shredded documents - more than tripling last year's collection. Congratulations to all involved!
