Frequently asked questions about the media center

Q. How many materials may a student check out?

A. Each student in grades 2-5 is allowed to check out two materials. If students are working on an assignment they may check out more than two materials. Remember that students can come to the media center to access all of the resources anytime during the school day.

Kindergarten and first grade students are allowed to check out one book. These students also attend the media center for story time and quiet reading as well as simple research.

Q. What software is available for student use?

A. There are ten computers available for student use in the media center. Our library computers have Microsoft Works, Appleworks, Inspiration, Kidspiration, Hyperstudio, Kid Pix, and Type to Learn. In addition, they have the library catalog.

Students may do Internet research and our school library subscribes to Grolier Online which has six encyclopedias, several dictionaries, and an atlas available for online research. Students may access Grolier Online and INFOhio at home by calling and getting a user name and password from the media specialist.

Q. How do students know if their materials are overdue?

A. Students receive a monthly overdue notice reminding them of materials that need to be returned. Weekly notices are sent in May since all materials need to be returned by the end of the school year.

If media center materials are damaged or lost, replacement costs will need to be paid. If payment is not received by the end of the school year, progress reports may be held. Our library does not charge fines for overdue materials.

Q. When are materials due?

A. Materials may be kept for two weeks. They may be renewed if another student or staff member has not requested them. Before new materials can be checked out, materials must be returned.

Q. How often may a student come to the media center?

A. Students are allowed in the media center as often as they wish, with teacher permission, to exchange books, work on computers, in small groups or individually.

Q. What types of materials are available for checkout?

A. Books, magazines, and audiotapes are available for checkout to students.
