Darby Creek Elementary and Brown Elementary now have their own Little Free Libraries. A Little Free Library is a “give a book, take a book” gathering place. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book in exchange for giving a book in return. The Little Free Libraries at Darby Creek and Brown will provide students with greater access to books outside school hours and help cultivate a collection of books at home for young readers.
During Convocation this year, Superintendent John Marschhausen asked staff members to dream big. In September, Teacher Librarian Jill Merkle had her wish granted – a Little Free Library for all 14 elementary buildings in the district. Darby Creek and Brown are the first to receive their library, the other elementary buildings are expected to receive their libraries in the spring.
