What is the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)?
NBPTS is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan and nongovernmental organization. It was formed in 1987 to advance the quality of teaching and learning by developing professional standards for accomplished teaching, creating a voluntary system to certify teachers who meet those standards and integrating certified teachers into educational reform efforts.
What is National Board Certification?
National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment
program designed to identify, recognize and reward accomplished teachers and
school counselors, who meet high and rigorous standards based on what teachers
should know and be able to do. National Board Certification is available nationwide
and covers 95 percent of preK-12 teachers.
National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential. It complements, but does not replace, a state’s teacher license. It is valid for 10 years, after which NBCTs can seek certification renewal.
As part of the certification process candidates complete10 components that are assessed by trained teachers in their certificate area. The components consist of four portfolio entries featuring teaching practice and six constructed response exercises that assess content knowledge.
