What is involved in the Mentorship Program?

Phase One

*Career Assessment, review I.C.P. (Individual Career Plan), examine career clusters

*Create resume

*Practice interviewing skills

*Interview

*Life plan . . . . set goals, objectives

*Parent, student, mentor, teacher meet

 

Phase Two

*Spend four to six hours a week with mentor

*Journal writing with documentation of hours, experiences, questions, schedules,

  mentor and parent signatures.

*Academic consultants, set objectives

*Weekly seminars, networking, stress management, communication skills, problem

  solving, balancing work and family, leadership skills, processing mentoring

  experiences.

 

Phase Three

*Anaylze and interpret career experiences

*Portfolio presentation . . . mentor, teacher, parents, friends

What type of student is enrolled in the program?
 
Criteria for Student Selection:                     
 - Receives positive teacher/employer recommendations
 - Excellent attendance
 - Successfully passes panel interview
 - No discipline referrals
 - Maintains a 2.0 G.P.A.
 - Student has own transportation
 - Student Exhibits positive leadership skills
 - Student is a junior or senior in high school

 

What is the time commitment involved in serving as a mentor?

           

-        Students arrange to mentor on the career site for 4-6 hours per week for a 10-12 week period of time, Tuesday- Fridays.

-        Mentoring hours are flexible each week depending on the mentor and student schedule. 

 

Does a student get paid?

 

-        No.  Career Mentorship is a non-paid learning opportunity.

 

What are the responsibilities of the mentor?

-        Help the student determine “learning objectives/goals” that he/she would like to accomplish throughout the mentorship experience.

-        Make sure the student arrives on time, eat time he/she is scheduled to mentor.

-        Sign the student’s Time Sheet each week.

-        Provide as many “hands-on” opportunities as possible, so the student can gain a realistic and well-educated perspective of the career field.  These could include basic day-to-day tasks, learning computer programs, attending meetings, designing/developing plan, observing significant “happenings” in the workplace, etc. 

-        Introduce the student to co-workers and other individuals in your career field, to increase his/her network and to add insight into the career.

-        Assist the student in completing activities conducted throughout the semester.  These include interviews, surveys, company/organization research, etc.

-        Complete an evaluation of the student (2 per semester) as well as attend a final presentation.

-        Provide career “advice” and discuss educational opportunities to help guide the student.

-        Contact the Career Mentorship Coordinator if there are any problems, questions or concerns!!!
