Learn about the bus stop consolidation plan
As a result of our continuing effort to provide the most efficient and effective transportation for the students of our school community, we have established several new policies and procedures.
- Distance between group stops in neighborhoods has been increased. Limiting the number of bus stops will result in a reduction of route time and fuel consumption.
- Bus drivers have been instructed to remain in their route areas between secondary and elementary runs instead of returning to the bus garage. Therefore, you will see buses sitting idle at various locations throughout the community.
- Bus drivers are not permitted to let their buses idle more than 5 minutes to further conserve fuel.
- All bus routes, including those for special needs students, have been reorganized in an attempt to keep route times at a minimum.
- Moved 8 buses to a satellite bus location at the Support Services Facility for buses that serve the south and southwestern portions of our school community resulting in a savings on fuel and wear and tear on the buses.
- Initiated an agreement with a local company to allow buses to refuel in the southern portion of our school community instead of having to return to the main bus garage.
- Began purchasing new school buses that have a more efficient exhaust system, required by the EPA.
As fuel costs continue to rise and funding in general becomes uncertain, our transportation department will be instituting additional changes in the near future to operate as efficiently and effectively as possible.
We will keep you informed as these necessary changes become reality. We are currently surveying similar districts for ideas that may also work in our school community and will continue to study ways to streamline our operations. Your continued support and understanding are very much appreciated.
Operations
The Transportation Department is located at 4970 Davidson Road. There is also a satellite office at our Support Services Facility where approximately 42 buses, a coordinator, a dispatcher and aides are stationed. The department handles all of the transportation needs of students to and from school as well as field trips and sporting events. Currently there are 148 buses in the fleet. The department is staffed with 112 bus drivers, 19 bus aides, 4 mechanics, 2 dispatchers, 2 secretaries, and 4 supervisors. Also on staff are a number of persons willing to substitute drive and aide.
