Dear Parents of Darby Creek Elementary Students:
As we begin this new school year, please remember that this is your school and we welcome your involvement. Our focus will be on providing each child with new challenges that will result in a rewarding school experience.
Attendance
Attendance is crucial to your child’s success in school. It is important that our students arrive at school on time each day and we strongly encourage parents to schedule appointments for their children outside of school hours in order to reduce classroom disruption and fragmentation in their child’s learning. Tardies, early dismissals, and absences are defined as the following within Pre-K-5 buildings within the Hilliard City School District:
- Tardy – Arriving up to 90 minutes after the tardy bell
- Early Dismissal – Leaving anytime within the last 90 minutes of the school day
- Full-Day Absence – Failing to be present for the entire school day
- Half-Day Absence – Being absent from school for more than 90 minutes in a school day.
Please be aware that tardy and early dismissal minutes will be added together for calculating a potential half-day absence. If a student arrives late and leaves early and the combined time that he/she is not in school is more than 90 minutes, the student will be charged with a tardy, early dismissal, and a half-day absence.
Kindergarten students attending ½ day classes are subject to the same guidelines with the exception of ½ day absences. As long as the student attends a portion of their school day, they receive credit for their attendance.
Traffic
Please play close attention to traffic pattern in the front service drive. The driveway between Pinefield Drive and Freewood Drive will be ONE WAY, running from Pinefield Drive south to Freewood Drive. The City of Columbus assures me this will be in effect by the first day of school.
I need your cooperation to make the traffic pattern around Darby Creek safe for the children at arrival and dismissal each day. If your child is a bus rider, he/she will arrive at Darby Creek and be dismissed each day in the front of the school. Our school buses are the only traffic allowed in the front of the school. All students who are walking to school will enter through the front doors of the school. If you will be dropping off or picking your child up, please follow traffic along the curb in the rear of the building. Staff members will direct traffic to continue pulling forward to our bright yellow sign. All students should be ready with all of their possessions in hand and be ready to enter and exit the car on the curb side. Due to serious student safety concerns, no one will be permitted to park their vehicle and escort their child across the parking lot unless the parent has a previously scheduled appointment with a staff member. You will be required to sign in at the office upon entering the building. Students are not permitted to walk across the parking lot. Please plan ahead and allow plenty of time to safely pick up and drop off your student.
